Have been having problems lately, won't actually go into Park at all...really only into Reverse....everything is one "off", you know? So since I can't get it into park, I have to shift to Neutral to start it.
What is wrong here? And, yes, I have to always put the parking brake on when leaving her because she's not really in park.
This is getting old and getting worse. How do I fix this?
Hi Gergs, here's something you might want to try. Under the hood look at the base of the steering column where it comes out of the firewall. You will see where the shift cable connects to the column. Disconnect the cable at this point then check to see if the shift lever works as it should. If it does the problem is in the cable or trans. If it still doesn't shift correctly the problem is in the column. To isolate the cable disconnect both ends and see if it moves freely in it's housing. If it binds the cable is breaking apart inside and needs replaced.
A couple notes here. First I'm pretty sure 94 trucks used a shift cable but it may have linkage. Troubleshooting proceedure is the same. Second if you have a column problem and decide to fix it yourself you might want to borrow or buy a service manual that covers it. Big thing here is the air bag. My 96 has one but I'm not sure if the 94 trucks had them. I'm told accidentally inflating the bag while working on the column is both painful and expensive.
My 1996 did the exact same thing, my problem was in the shift tube (which is in the column) 2 bushings that go bad on the rod itself, and you also have a connector on the very back of the shift tube where the cable attaches that can come loose as well which can be tightened up with a torx bit (I forget the size I used) not sure how much help I am, but it's what worked for me. This might be of some help, it's basic visual on the bushings in the column another on the forum might be able to better identify the other issue (connector on the back of the shift rod)
