go here and look how this guy ran his snorkle (http://hammerdownoffroad.com/bobsm37.htm) i kinda like the way that was ran, id probably put a cover ontop of the filter to keep rain and such out of it though. but how do yall think that would work.

That's not bad, but get on the road, and it would create a vacuum in the intake.
As a sidenote, I got the PVC for mine yesterday.

Man this is a great thread! I was planning on adding a snorkel to my 1979 F250, but then I decided not too...but after reading this thread---I want to snorkel it again!!!!!. I think the best thing we can do before we cut up our trucks is write these companies that make snorkels for land rovers. Ask them about the design and structure, how they keep the water out, etc. I will email these people and see what they say, when they write me back I'll share any info with yall.
My uncle has a friend who does metal work and fab with stainless and aluminum...and he can make anything, bend it however you want...this guy is amazing, ofcourse having precision bending and molding machines helps him out too! Anyway, Im going to take him a design to see if he can fabricate a snrokel for me like the ones land rovers use. He can use stainless or aluminum, aluminum would be lighter. If that doesn't work out...I will stick to the pvc! Alright, Ill talk to ya'll later.

I found out to top off my snorkle- I have one of those Edelbrock free-flowing air cleaners (the ugly triangular ones), that I removed the foam from. I am going to make a plate for the inside, to keep air from just going accross the top, paint it black to match the truck, and pop-rivet it to the top of the PVC. This should work quite nicely.

Ok- change of plans. I am now installing the Eddy air cleaner in the top right rear corner of the cab, with a pipe coming down through the cab, exiting through the floor behind the seat, and going under the truck to the airbox. This way, I don't have an ugly pipe to look at running up the side of my windshield, possibly interfering with the pass. door, and I don't have any hood spring issues. I am going to cut a hole in my roof the size of the base of the cleaner mentioned in my last post, with a street flange bolted through it all. Then, the 4" PVC all the way to the airbox. Sound good?

its a good idea if thats what you want. i dont really want mine run all throuth the cab like that, but hey, whatever floats your boat, right? next time i go down to our beach im going to stop by a military vehicle salvage yard thats on the way and take a peek at some of the military snorkles and see how those things are set up, and to see if i can find any cool military stuff to use on my truck.

id like to get started on the snorkle soon but nothing is going as planned on my axle swap

hey man....take a look at the trucks from the last two years of the TTC in fourwheeler. Most all of them have some type of snorkel, be it metal, pvc or flex tube. One thing in common with alot of them is they use the same thing to attach the snorkel to their carb. I think its made by k&n but it just bolts on top of the carb and has a male end coming out the side where you can attatch tubing.

check out pg 49,59 of the oct. 2001 FourWheeler mag.
and check out 59 of the 2002 oct adition. Pictures usually help get the mind going

i really like that idea of going under and through the cab! let me know how it works. that idea, used with the bolt on adaptor, make for a very good plan IMO.

I looked at the TTC trucks, especially the setup on Scott's Raptor, and I really don't like them. Having an air filter waving around up on the roof just doesn't say "ok for the highway" to me. This truck is going to be something I can take mudding all day long, take my girlfriend out to dinner in, and then mud all the next day. I already have clearance problems with the stock height, so more won't hurt. Most military vehicles use an 18-wheeler style air cleaner. I have seen very few that had an actual snorkle on them. Even the Hummers have the same style aircleaner sandwiched in between the cab and hood.

Okay here's my 2 cents-
After I hydraulic'd my original motor a couple years back driving into a lake too fast I thought long and hard about the snorkel. I looked at them Range Rovers, and came away with a couple thoughts. Firstly, their snorkels are mainly to look pretty. With all the thousands of computerized electrical components on any modern vehicle do you honestly think just a snorkle is gonna let a Soccermom drive over her head in water? And unless canals in your part of the world are concrete with a broom finish at the bottom a dual purpose Ford isn't gonna go that deep either. Sorry- just trying to bring this topic back to Earth.
Anyway, practically speaking, EVERYTHING you need is at Home Depot. And mostly, don't think that you have to terminate your snorkle with an air cleaner. The way I did mine was to seal the airfilter housing(EFI) and still run the stock airfilter. From there is a 3" ID rubber intake pipe off a newer junk car which goes to approximately a ninety degree airduct pipe(Home depot). Stuck the vent hose off the front diff in there too. It faces the firewall, driver side, at the same level as the top of the brake booster. All under the hood of course. On my truck that's 4 foot 6 inches, or waist deep in the drivers seat. Deep enough for me.
Also- I repack or replace wheel bearings minimum every 3000 miles like oil changing maintenence. You might want to convert to electric fans you can turn off too- that flexfan throws water under the hood like crazy! Buy some Star Bright liquid electrical tape too. That stuff is the ***** for all your waterproofing needs.
Just my 2 cents

I just saw a 92 caddy, the front wheel drive model with the V8 not the Opel built one and it had an adapter on the throttle body for a fender mounted air cleaner that looks like its a standard 5 1/8 size, I was in a hurry and couldn't run out to my truck and get a tape to measure it but I'm trying to get to it. If someone else finds out let me know. If its the right size it would be a great snorkel adapter. I just want to relocate my air filter to the less cluttered fender and route in "cool" air.

I jst picked up a snorkel from a 92 Caddy it fits a four barrel perfectly and the inlet is 3 1/2 OD. I might put a K&N on it I haven't decided yet.
