i think im just going to get one long peice of PVC and heat it up and bend it at the points were i need bends, to keep the air filter safe from the elements im makeing a cover for it out of metal to surround the filter.
Just got back from wheelin' and REALLY want to get a snorkel now. I got the nose of the truck under water then got stuck. It idled fine but when I gave 'er, the fan threw water everywhere - dist, carb, plugs, etc... and that was all she wrote.
I'm considering using that flexible exhaust stuff (flex pipe). It comes in 8' sections and I can get a piece for about $20 -$30. I'm thinking I'll just attach it to the air filter where the air horn is.
silicone will solve any spark plug/water issues you've got. are you going to run that flexpipe out through the hood? I don't really want to cut mine, or the firewall either. It seems like a long ways to go, but the only way i see to not cut anything is out the grille, then back to the cab along the fender top. Are you guys going thru the corner of the hood by the pass. door?
You could run it under the cab and up the back too. Kinda like stacks would be run. You could even terminate it below the top of the bed if you wanted to hide it.
I'm gonna use some dryer vent stuff to test the noise level in the cab. If it's a constans air-sucking hiss, I'll run up thru the hood. I think if it were comming out the side of my 78, it would stick out too far.
im just going to cut a hole in the passenger side of my truck over the fender and heat up and bend some either 3" or 3.5" PVC for mine. i cant do the stack thing because my truck already has 2 stacks coming out of a flowmaster
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Sep-02 AT 12:20 PM (EST)]What are your plans for the intake opening? Are you gonna use a scoop-like thingy or a mushroom-like cap (like on military vehicles)?
I'm thinking a cap would be better for keeping water out. Especially if it's raining or if you hit a shallow water hole at high speed. A lot of farm tractors and some semis use them so they should be readily available.
Another possibility is pointing the scoop backwards, but I don't know if that would cause a vacuum at high speeds.
Too bad we live so far apart. It sounds like we're after the same thing in a truck.
you got me interested in the military style you were talking about, once i get underway with the snorkel, which will probably be a while, i will look into that mushroom style you were talking about, i figure if its good enough for big rigs and the military its good enough for me.
I got curious and really didn't want to study, so I looked around online and found what might prove to be a very helpful website. it's located at www.airflo.com and is aimed towards big rigs. they sell the mushroom deals, inline filters, rubber bends for intake piping, metal intake pipes, and cool exhaust stuff too. i didn't spend too much time there, but what i saw looked like what you guys are interested in. i think next summer i'll get to that, and i'll definentely take another look there. (when you get to the website, click on "filtration.")
This is a good thread, lots of info. I probably will go with the Dodge airbox with a K&N on top of my carb, with a pvc pipe out the fender and up the A-pillar. As far as the top, I will probably cut, bend, and glue the top of the pipe to look like the one you see on the Camel Trophy Range Rovers. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
dang this post has gotten a lot of inqueries since you started it orange peel. i think when i do mine i will use 3 or 4 inch pvc pipe with rubber fittings and run it through my r/h fender and inner fender then run it up the a-pilar and put some kind of top on it. i am just having trouble finding a closed (stock)air cleaner to put on the carb so i can run a k & n filter and make it water tight.

im going to use PVC big enough to fit either in or over a K&N cone filter, or thats what i plan so far, the whole water tight thing is what keeps holdin me back, ill just put silicon or RTV or something over all the joints, holes, and gaps that i have. what im worried about is getting rain water sucked in the snorkle or filter when i start it up. i dont know if that should be a real worry or not. and im still not sure of how to cover the top of the snorkle, i just need to sit down and put more thought into it than i have been, i havent had much time to sit since i started all this other crap on my truck.
Mine is going to be permanentely attached. But then again, my truck probably won't be a DAILY driver....i'm guessing 2-4 times a week, and offroad all wkend.
