Has anyone tried these? Any noticeable difference good or bad? Just curious. Thinking about changing my plugs very soon. Truck has alot of miles so toyed with changing the coils too. If someone has some good info would be much appreciated.
Also awhile back I read on here somewhere someone mentioned using the Air Box Snorkle from an 03 in place of the 99 one. Does this really help? Ive looked all over and cant find any info on it. Also looked for the 03 snorkle and no luck finding one to give it a try.
I'm a 5.4 V8 owner, lurking here in the V10 forums but there's enough in common maybe my experience will be helpful.........
You'll be hard pressed to find a better COP than Motorcraft, same with spark plugs (although the Autolite's are a suitable replacement) I too thought a "better" COP would improve my engine but it did almost nothing noticeable--used Granatelli's. Gas mileage, performance, starting---all just the same.
What I did experience was a complete failure of one COP about 3 months in, replaced under warranty. About 18 months later had a misfire condition that would correct itself by restarting, eventually decided this only happened when the outside temps dropped below 38* overnight. Replaced both COP's with the original OEM and not an issue since.
The claims of higher output voltages blah blah are great ad copy but IME stock COP's are just fine, no need to change them unless they're known bad. Plug changes should be done about 50K miles despite claims they'll go 100K. Boots should be at minimum inspected and replaced even if suspect, NAPA USA made Belden p/n 702418 for less than $5 each makes this a no-brainer.
Don't mean to rain on your parade but experience is the best teacher----and its cheaper to let others do the experimenting too!
I recently pulled a mixed bag of brands off my truck when I changed my COPs out. Worst offenders were Accel brand, where the boots stayed attached to the plugs instead of the coil, one of the springs broke, and both had alot of discoloration of the springs at the center.
All new plugs and COPs got rid of alot of my running issues, but it still has a misfire. Gotta keep looking.
I have not heard of this particular brand. But if I were a betting man, I would guess they are the same POS Chinese E-Bay coils with a different sticker on them.
To date, the only feedback we've heard on aftermarket coils (when compared to new stock Motorcraft) is as follows:
- They are FAR less reliable
- They make absolutely no difference in power on a normally aspirated engine.
With regards to the snorkle: A larger one certainly can't hurt.... the stocker on my '99 was surprisingly small.
I used one off of an '06 motor home. It is at least an inch or two bigger. I cut the airbox to the same ID, then glued it on with JB weld with some fiberglass cloth embedded in it. Then added nice pretty fillets with black silicone. Looks good and has held up for 4 years so far.
Bit more intake moan, but nothing like the aftermarket intakes.
I think that company is reputable. I have their wires and a coil on my 99 mustang. A friend put one if their DUI ignitions and distributor on his 62 galaxy. Very pleased with how it has performed on his 450+ HP 390. From my experience the company seems good. That's nit to say the coils for these engines are.
You're exactly correct Samorkand---in fact many companies we've used are great outfits, Granatelli being one (in my case.) Sadly it seems most of the COP's manufacture is farmed out, possibly by the same people, just different brand name and case color added. It could also be argued the MotorCraft COP's are just the same too yet we rarely hear of that brand being consistently problematic.
In the end its more than just the name though otherwise we'd all be suffering with failing COP's one right after another.
