Can anyone else chime in where there DPF was cracked. Again, my tips are black and the tech says he does not see any visble cracks. I would like to try and be able to show him a specific spot if possible. He still seems to think the tips being black are from a defective EGR valve.
Nick
The DPF doesn't crack on the outside. It has to be removed and looked at thru the inlet and outlet. If the outlet of the dpf is black with soot, it is cracked. Even though a DPF's efficiency is only 90+%, it will remove the larger particles first. It's efficiency also increases as it collects soot.
Even if the EGR is stuck open, the DPF would still have to capture the excessive soot the engine would be creating. Like it was said, DPFs crack internally, they are not visible on the outside.

It's the excessive soot that is cracking the filter. A regen on an overloaded filter causes localized super-hot spots in the ceramic substrate. This is what cracks the filter. I've cracked more than one filter from something as simple as a malfunctioning egr mass flow sensor. I've also cracked a filter due to a cracked CAC.
i own a 6.4 with about 1800 miles on it. i noticed that the tail pipes are pitch black so i took it to my local dealer today. showed the service adviser and he said thats perfectly normal. i told him he didnt know what he was talking about and asked for a tech to look at it. tech looks at it and asked me if its ever gone ino regen and i told him it has...once. he said that the black soot is from the truck going into regen and that i should reflash it for the latest program.
is this accurate? doesnt black soot usually mean a cracked dpf? any advice on what i should do? thanks!
hey eric this is livinlarge4u it mean you have lost a injector in your truck go to the dealer and tell them to run a injector test
