i own a 6.4 with about 1800 miles on it. i noticed that the tail pipes are pitch black so i took it to my local dealer today. showed the service adviser and he said thats perfectly normal. i told him he didnt know what he was talking about and asked for a tech to look at it. tech looks at it and asked me if its ever gone ino regen and i told him it has...once. he said that the black soot is from the truck going into regen and that i should reflash it for the latest program.
is this accurate? doesnt black soot usually mean a cracked dpf? any advice on what i should do? thanks!
yep, that service dept is trying to screw you..............take it from one who had pitch black tailpipes and only -1- regen approx. for the 1st 2000 miles, you have a cracked dpf. ask this dishonest service dept if they even looked at the dpf??? the 2nd service dept i took my truck to (1800 miles from home) told me they saw the crack in the dpf............
by the way, as many helpful ford employees have stated, FIND OUT WHY the dpf failed.....
I'll be another person in line who says find another service department. You are 100% correct when it comes to the soot on the tailpipes.
The saddest part is Ford is cracking down hard on warranty claims when it comes to tuners but when it's related to the EPA mandated crap on the 6.4, then they say it's normal for the tailpipes to be black.
It will also create problems with the regeneration cycle. Not long after my friends 08 started getting black pipes he had some major issues. Biggest one would be when the message center would read "Pull over safely and stop the vehicle" It's caused by the EGT's being too high in the exhaust system around the DPF. The truck then shuts itself down and will not start for an hour. Because the DPF was cracked the last temp sensor after the DPF would be reading too high.
Try to get a smog check with a cracked DPF. Good luck getting it to pass. Of course that doesn't matter if your state doesn't sniff diesel trucks. Nevada does...even my 6.0!
You have a defective DPF..Been there done that.. Our dealer looked at the black tailpipe and ordered a new DPF. A black tail pipe IS NOT normal for ANY brand truck with a DPF.
so i dropped the truck off yesterday back at my local dealership. the serivce advisor said he'll have the tech check for damage to the dpf , do a couple of recall replacements, and lastly reflash with latest program.
the advisor calls me today around 2ish and says that the dpf is cracked and one is on order but might not be here till friday. so i go and pick up the truck and will bring it back when the dpf arrives.
couple things i noticed:
mpg on the digital dropped dramatically! i was at 12.2 mpg when i dropped it off and when i drove off today it was at 6.o mpg. wth??? the ride home was about 6 miles of freeway driving and it went up a little to 8.1 mpgs than when i got off the freeway and started driving in town it started going down slightly again. is this normal? the mpgs never fluctuated like this before.
also it feels like the truck has more turbo lag now. takes a lot longer to pick up. does the motor need time to adjust to the new program? anybody have any insight on these issues im having before i go blow up on the service advisor? thanks...
