Well the DPF cannot filter every last bit of soot, but something like 99.5% of all the soot. It should take at least a 150,000 miles or more before the the tail pipe start getting black.
So my tips were black and while its in for the bed plate leak I mentioned about possibly the DPF being bad. From all the checks and test they ran on the truck they said nothing points at a defective DPF. The mechanic also said there are no visible cracks.
What he did say though is he believes I have a bad EGR valve so they will be replacing that. If after the pipes are cleaned and they become black again the truck will return.
Took mine to the dealer last week and talked to the tech. He looked at the tail pipe and said "yep, you have a cracked DPF" so I made an appointment. The service writer asked if there was anything else wrong and I asked about the severe turbo lag. He asked if my mpg was bad (well duh, yeah) and then told me there was a new program to improve mpg and reduce turbo lag. Sounds like a Darrell Waltrip story to me but I made the appointment and dropped it off yesterday. The service writer called today to say the DPF was fine and the reprogram addresses the mpg, turbo lag, AND THE BLACK SOOT in the tailpipe. Unless this new program comes with a magic wand I think I was just fed a line of BS. but I understand that Ford needs to tighten the cash any way they can so I will play the game the way it is supposed to be played. I will give this miracle flash the benefit of doubt, clean up my tail pipes and drive it to see what happens. If its fixed I will publicly apologize for my sarcasm but if its not fixed I will return to the dealer with "I told you so" stamped on my forehead.
When you guys are saying your DPF was cracked, where was the crack. My truck is on the lift right now at Ford. If i can give them an idea of where its at maybe that will help.

The ceramic substrate is cracked. It's not easily seen unless it's really bad.

Caprang: Can you ask the service writer what the new program is to improve Mpg and reduce turbo lag? It is usually a Special Service Message or Technical Service Bulletin with a number and date. I am not aware of a new reprogramming for turbo lag and MPG improvement at the moment. Pilotshot
I have a Job 1 truck. I took my truck in to the dealer and the service writer told me that the black pipes was not right. When I picked the truck up, she stated that they had re-flashed the truck and that should take care of the soot. She said if it gets sooty again, bring it back and it is probably a bad DPF. I am going to clean the tips and keep an eye on them. I did not notice any more or less turbo lag after the flash. The only thing I noticed different is the display now tells me that it is cleaning and then tells me when it is done.
I had the latest flash July 18 and believe me, it does nothing for the soot! Here's a look at my tips after I cleaned them really good and drove 80-100 miles. soot.flv - Video - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting My job 1 has a little over 30,000 miles now and has had black sooty tips since day 1. The flash did fix the warp speed rusume on cruise though, I really didn't notice any difference in the turbo lag or mpg's.
Can anyone else chime in where there DPF was cracked. Again, my tips are black and the tech says he does not see any visble cracks. I would like to try and be able to show him a specific spot if possible. He still seems to think the tips being black are from a defective EGR valve.
EGR valve just rang a bell. I talked to my service writer last week about my sooty tailpipes and black smoke on the phone. He said he would have to talk to the diesel tech, but he said it sounded like an EGR valve problem to him. Could someone elaborate on the EGR valve? I'm dumber than a box of rocks on these type of things. What does the EGR valve do? Would it cause the soot? Is it difficult to replace? Do we really need it? Stuff like that.

The EGR valve controls the amount of exhaust gas that is returned to the intake. If the EGR valve is stuck open, it would create a ton of soot. Tyically though, if the valve was stuck open, you would have a CEL. It could also be that the EGR coolers are fouling with soot thus decreasing their cooling efficiency. This will also cause excessive soot formation.
