We were camping last week next to a river. I thought I would take my pup down to try and get her a little more comfortable around the water. Well she still doesn't know what to think of it. She dug a rock and then stuck her nose in the water and picked out the rock. Now if I toss a rock out a little farther she will stick most of her head under the water to get the rock, as long as her back feet don't have to get very far into the water.

Sounds like my pup Chris. So far my pup loves digging in the sand, loves the wet grass, but just doesnt quite know what to think about actually jumping in the water yet.

Yep that sounds about right. Can't wait to see how she reacts to the first snow fall.

Yea everything is new to them. It's pretty funny how they react to some things.

Our big dog (the 100 pound mutt) had an interesting introduction to water last month. We call him "Velcro-dog" 'cause sticks right to my wife's knee most of the time. We were staying at a camp up in Maine on a lake, and my wife decides she's going to take the kayak out for bit. Of course the dog starts to freak, he's running up and down the shore, and out on to the dock, jumping from the end of the dock out onto a small bass boat tied up at the end of the dock and then back. I watched him for a bit, and he seemed to calm down some so we walked back to the house, which is about 100 ft back from the lake, up a steep hill. I'm doing something, and I realize the dog has gone back down to the dock, and is going to get on the boat again. This time, however, he puts his just his front feet on the boat, and of course the boat starts to get pushed away from the dock. He stretches out as far as he can, and then plunks right in the lake between the boat and the dock. The boat hits the end of the slack in the mooring ropes and starts back towards the dock, and pushes the dog under the dock. Now this is right after about a month of lots of rain and the lake is high - there's only about a 1/2 inch of space air space beneath the dock. So I'm running down the hill, over rocks and logs trying to not trip and break my leg, I get to the dock and the dog is gone. I thought I was going to have to dive in, but I lay down on the dock and reached waaay underneath and managed to grab a handful of fur, and with that, pulled him out from under the dock. I got him back up in the dock and he was coughing and gagging and spitting out water - damn near lost him that time. If I hadn't seen him go in it probably would have taken me too long to figure out where we went to get him out in time!

In keeping with the title of this thread, he did go swimming the next day off the same dock... Dumb dog!

I love threads like this. You've motivated me to upload the one pic I have here at the office.

This is Domino, a shepard mix (we think some pit might be in her too). This was the day we brought her home. She's going on 4 now and is MUCH larger. I'll tell you, when you get in bed you best get all the blankets you want because once she plops down she becomes dead weight and nothing will move her unless you so much as whisper "dinner," "outside" or "football."

She smelled really bad when we brought her home too, haha. How could you resist that face though.

Jim that is a hilarious story (mainly because in the end the dog was ok too) would have been terrible if something bad did happen.

I can just picture the dog stretching way out haha.

Virto that is a cute looking pup. Feel free to load more pics when you get a chance too

My dog has been just great lately. We have a small pile of gravel in the yard, and its kinda steep up top. She goes walking up to the top and the gravel gives away, so she slides down, trying to catch the gravel that flows down, tumbles and rolls and slides down, then she gets right back up there again!
