I've got a breakfast buddy that's a GM guy. He says their bunch get their shorts in a wad at the mention of a Ford 9" pushing their iron down the road. Seems like fair pay back to me.
I'll give the FTE admin some credit on one point. Here, you can use the word Chevy and it will appear. Some sites I go to, you have to "x" out some letters in Ford to get the word to post. That's just lame.
And in a continuing effort to keep it churned up, here's a pic of a 53 vette from Indy Goodguys. Enjoy.
Welcome to the board Timboy, running Ford truck with any engine will get you down the road. I have a mut of a truck, with a "84 Buick 307 (Olds) engine, front and rear clip from same Buick. When you have a free donor and a truck without a drive train you do what it take to get it on the road. Sure I'd much rather have a 289 for a mill but working within a budget. They is a great bunch of guys and gals on here that will give you a little ribbing about the combo but they are glad to see another classic saved from the crusher or rust monster.

Welcome Timboy, mine came with a 283 and I swapped a 350. Looks aren't everything in these old trucks. whatever it takes to make it roll down the road.
Hi everyone, I haven't posted for a long time. I haven't worked on my truck in a long time either. But today on craigslist I found a rolling chassis on craigslist. I called and he happened to be coming to town. I'll be going to look at it on tuesday, He only wants 150 for it. He did bring the trans in for me. 50 dollars for it. It's a 4 speed though out of a 51 f-1. It is covered with grease and it seems to work just fine. Did I get a good deal or not ? At least I have a trans now to go with the flathead v8.
Welcome to the board. Here you'll find a very knowledgeable bunch of guys and gals that can help you through a lot of headaches. Some are fussy about all Ford parts, and I understand, I use to have a stock 31 Model A Ford coupe. I'm considered a darksider by some, because my donor car is a Buick, not what I wanted but, it was given to me,and the price fit well into my budget.
Hey Ross, heavy is relative. I have a bad back and I was able to load it and unload it from my truck. It has the right mounts for an f-1. I don't think it's meant for a bigger truck. Am I wrong. Do any of the 4 spds have synchros?
Got a picture of it? No, none of the 4-sp's in BonusBuilt F-1 to F-5 (?) trucks were synchro'd, I think one of the really big truck 4-sp's was. Check for casting numbers on the side of the case. The 4-sp spur gear tranny is a T9
the best I could see ( dark out and greasy) T 8 D - 1 A Does that sound correct? I checked the spline of the clutch disc off the flathead v8 I have and it fits the trans, 10 spline
See if the front edge of the trans bell has two cutaways on the passenger side, near the top, for starter clearance. Short of a picture, that's as close as I can get to saying it's a T9.
welcome run what ya brung i say do what you can afford purists who say it has to be a ford arent purists unless they run a completely stock unit but if your happy with it good for you I gave up caring what other people think long ago better to have it on the road than in the drive way
The easiest way to tell if you have a synchronized 4 speed is to check the shift pattern. In the bigger trucks the synchronized 4 speed had reverse to the right and up. The non-synchro is to the right and down. As Ross said they synchronized were offered in the bigger trucks as an option in, I think, 49-50, and standard in the '51 an up. I have one in my '51 F-4.
