If you have not already figured it out...the inmates run the place.
I am one of the semi-restorers. Mine is mostly stock, but it does/will have a few modern things added. Personally, I would not put a chevy in a ford. I would not put a ford in a chevy or whatever else in a dodge. I prefer to keep the brands what they are unless it is just not available at all.
You can get complete running LTDs with a 302 EFI/AOD around here for less than $500. I have seen quite a few of them sell like that. I almost bought one for my truck, but liked the stock drivetrain. You can use the front clip (suspension), the rear end, engine, transmission, wiring harness/computer, maybe steering column, and other assorted parts.
I do raz a few of the guys about other brands of drivetrains once in a while , but it is their trucks and they are welcome to do what they want with them. They know I am just teasing them (I hope).
I am on an extremely low budget..so I understand using what you have or can scrounge up.
At least they are not being crushed and sent to China to make cheap tools out of.
You will find all the help you need around here for your truck. Just don't ask in public too much about the chevy drivetrain. PM some of the members who have them and they can help.
It's kind of like the Harley riders giving rice grinders a little good natured grief. I once spread a cup of uncooked rice under my friends Honda and told him he had a fuel leak.
Truth be told it's good to see someone taking care of an old truck no matter what they put in it. Personally, the only non ford engine I would consider putting in my 56 would be a period (read 50's model) Chrysler 392 Hemi.
I currently have a 68 model 289/C4 with a late 70's 460/C6 waiting it's turn.
Wow!! I think I've stirred up a hornets nest. This chevy in a ford thing. So far the truck has a disc brake kit on the front with a chevy 4 3/4 lug pattern.... a toyota power steering box...and a ford 9 inch rear with 2.78 gears out of a torino....after market mustang fuel tank between the rear frame rails. I've been collecting parts and tools for quite awhile. wiring harness , gauges , welder , engine hoist , bed parts , and other stuff. Thanks for all the replies to my concerns. I think I'll be on here quite often for some help with my project. I want to set up a gallery , so I'll have to take some pics of my parts and project. Later..............
Not really a hornets nest. Almost everyone teases the "darksiders" around here. We really are glad to have you around and see another person has caught the "bug".
In case you have not caught on to the terms yet...darksiders (heavily modified), graysiders (slight modifications from stock-I.E. me), and lightsiders (totally stock).
It sounds like you have it planned out pretty well and have a ton of parts and tools already.
welcome to the dark side tim, some don't like the chevy motor in a ford, but love the toyota box, chevy steering colum, or any other non ford item to make the truck run. i myself am thankful you picked a ford body to cover up that chevy engine.
you made that post for an intro and you didnt get lynched or hung , so you might just make it . but beware of some of the guys they carry crosses , holy water and stakes to drive through the hearts of the impure ... LOL!!!!!!
Welcome to the forum. You aren't the only one that is playing frankentruck. My baby is almost done and I couldn't be prouder of the Chevy guts. FYI, it came with the Chevy V8, and I wouldn't have changed out a flathead for it. I just rolled with what I had.
I was at our truck club meeting last night (53-56 F100s) and a guy was talking about a trip he and the wife took to Oregon. Said they rode on some high speed boat down some river up there...the boat had 3 GM 454 engines! One of the local wise___'s commented that "sounds about right, one to run the boat and two spares!".
