Hi all ... My '72 has some serious steering problems. I'm thinking it's the rag joint, but I haven't had a chance to take a serious look at it. When I turn the steering wheel, it spins freely almost a complete revolution, and then gets VERY hard to turn. It does the same thing turning both left and right. Could it be something like the rag joint? Or does it sound like the entire steering column needs to be rebuilt/replaced? If I push/pull on the steering wheel the, steering column moves in and out of the steering box. And when I spin the wheel, the column seems to "unscrew" itself just below the rag joint.
Mine has a granny shifter, but and auto trans, so this may be a good enough excuse to go ahead and get a new (AT) steering column.
Thoughts? Thanks!

Sounds like the steering box is GONE! You need to confirm if the rubber disc is hurt, or if it's the shaft from the box that is moving. Is this a power steering box?
This sounds like the rag joint to me. The rag joint in my 66 failed while I was cruising--it got very hard steering because the column side tried to climb the box side instead of turning it. Mine decided to ingest half the wiring on the firewall while it was at it! If you suspect the rag joint-REPLACE it!! They're about $30.00 from Dennis Carpenter, or LMC. If you still have the problem; at least when you solve it, you won't have to worry about your rag joint!
Hello, I'm going to replace this joint on mine soon, this week , will be following this link, there is another post on here about this joint, and he said it made a big difference, mine is sloppy, hoping yours is a easy fix... good luck! Pap. P.S. Mine is also the 72 F100
oh its like driving a whole new truck. you hold the wheel steady and she goes straight. turn it just a tiny bit and the truck will respond to it. no play or sloppyness whatsoever anymore.
Don't you love when it goes like that, have to do mine... driving one of these trucks all worn out is a challenge...Pap.. or I should have said are a real Danger Dave.....
