Where is the DPFE sensor on a 96 v8 explorer. The local garage said that is what was causing my check engine light to come on. If anyone has changed one on a similar explorer, what did you have to remove to do it?
1996 5.0's do not have a DPFE sensor. The late 97's through 2001's did, but not the 96 and early 97's. You probably need to replace the EGR valve itself if you are getting codes that are associated with a DPFE.
I've gotten fairly good at changing them as mine use to eat EGR valves because of the supercharger. The first time I did it, it was a fun job to say the least. Not hard, just time consuming. You will find it on the back of the intake elbow. I haven't done one in a while because I removed the EGR Valve, put a block plate on, and tuned it out with my XCal tuner, but I think it was 2 13mm bolts, plus a vacumm line on the bottom right side.
I know I have a pic at home that I can post later.
Basically, find your throttle body. The TB is bolted to an elbow that turns into the uppoer intake. On the back of the elbow, there is a round bowl looking part that has an orange plunger in it. It will be held on by two bolts.
I replaced the egr and the sensor that bolt to it and the check engine light came back on. I borrowed a scanner and the code is P0402 exhaust gas recirculation flow excessive detected, then it has four ovals that are flashing which are cat, o2s, htr, eva and up in the corner it says pending code 02.
