It was a li'l bit warm here today, I think we hit 107*. Got the truck washed and let the kids swim for a couple hours. Finally back home and watching the olympics.
Checking in from humid Cedar Rapids Iowa! Sitting in the hotel lobby stealing internet.
Well it was a long drive, but a pretty one. Spent Thursday night at a friend's house. I ended up sleeping (or trying to sleep) on a loveseat. I'm not the tallest person in the world, but at 5' 6" I was half on the loveseat, half off...with a purring kitty that insisted on sleeping ontop of me. Their place also wasn't in the best part of town, so I was half awake all night listening for the sound of the alarm on the Nissan. Needless to say I didn't get much sleep and I was off and running at 5AM that morning. Terrible fog coming out of the North Platte area, but once the sun came up, it was a gorgeous day. Gorgeous drive. Anyone who says the drive through Nebraska and into Iowa is boring is nuts.
Pretty uneventful drive, except my coming down out of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Got the attention of a statey going 77 in a 70, he flipped around to come and get me and I'm thinkin #$#*&@!!. Right about that time, on the other side of the highway, a lil mustang, breaking free of a big convoy of Semis, fired up at about 95-100mph. Needless to say, that statey let me go on my way after that...
Today we went to Mount Vernon Iowa, and man is it gorgeous there. Thought I'd share some pictures, who knew Iowa looked so good. These pictures do not do this place justice. I just wish I had audio to capture the sounds of the birds singing and the way it smelled, like a mixture of cedar and fresh cut grass. The town of Mount Vernon was cool too, Cornell College is there and its a very old town, mostly old Victorians and very small narrow city streets.
Anyway, took lots of pictures. If anyone wants to go look at the entire album, I have it here:
Another long day tomorrow but hopefully we'll sign in on a rental house tomorrow and be done with it! I'm flying back into Denver late Monday night, so, I probably wont get back to you guys till then.
Sounds like you had a great trip.
And from what you are saying about the place, it sounds like it would be very easy for you to call it home.
It would suck getting transplanted there from Colorado and spend the whole time yearning for where you came from.

On today's menu:
Bacon wrapped jalapenos stuffed with Philly Creamed Cheese, Italian sausages and Jason's famous Tiger Brats. And one more thing, cold Lonestar.
And just to keep this truck related. Here's a picture of my expensive, but fast, kitchen countertop:
Bon appetit or as they say in Texas, "Do y'all want some grub?"
