My tranny is shot. I need a new one. I found one on craigslist for $200. I called the guy and it is a E4od and comes with torque converter from a 1996 E-250 and the motor is a 351 5.8 windsor. It was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago. Will this work/bolt up to the 4.9L? I don't feel comfortable installing the thing myself so i have to pay a shop to do it. What do you guys think?
If I do buy it should i get an aftermarket tranny cooler? I know these trannys like to burn up. I live in milwaukee WI but will be moving to Houston TX in a few months. It's like 100 degrees down there!
the guy said that the motor went and he kinda sounded like he didn't exactly know what it was worth or what he was talking about if you know what i mean. I think he just knows he has somewhat of a good tranny and he just pretty much pulled the dollar ammount out of his a$$! So thats cool if I can get my hands on it!!!!!!!o
If he had it rebuilt, or bought it remanufactured he'd know all to well what it was worth, that is if there is any truth to what he claims.
No way I'd go through all the work of putting in a trany that comes with a story like that.
I mean hey if it's old, has thousands of miles on it and it works is worth 200 but come on only 10.000 miles for $200? Something just ain't right there.
Trannys are labor intensive, especially a heavy ole E4OD, but to go through all that work to find you have a pile of poo in the end is heart breaking at the very least. Not to mention the money spent for it and on it.
I won't even buy junk yard tranny's, sure if it's dead once you have it in and all filled up with fresh fluid to find its junk they'll exchange it, but you can flush your labor down the ****ter.
Your upside as far as a tranny job is a 2wd but even at that.....
ok so yea i am already cautious about the purchase, but will it bolt right in to my truck?
Yes, the bellhousing is the same - but you will have to change the shifter linkage on the side of the 96' transmission, as it is not the same linkage as your 90'.
Hope it works out for you...

Should I be able to do this easily by just looking at the differences between the two tranny's and swapping the parts in?
