It depends on what type of trailer a person is considering. What I paid for the deck I could have bought a steel open bed 2 place trailer, but then the sleds are covered in salt and road crap from driving. We have good quality covers for them but they still get filthy. The deck gets the sleds up and out of the majority of the road mess, but costs 1/2 or less than a 2 place enclosed. Not to mention the cost of hauling a trailer vs having a bed load of cargo is something to consider. Also, most of the box of the truck is still open for all our gear.
I hate those sled decks. I see why and how they would be handy though. Ive seen and heard too many guys put a ski through their back window to want one for myself, but since Im cheap id probably be very careful to not slam into the back window anyways haha. I would never get one to haul my sleds around though.
Partly due to the fact that I have a trailer, plus use a trailer for more then just hauling sleds around. I use ours for quads, mowers, cars, junk hauling, you name it.
What I have done with mine is I made a cover for the front of the trailer to keep the road grime and whatnot from splattering the sleds. It works great and Im actually working on making one out of aluminum sheeting and tubing now.
It works good for keeping gravel from hammering whatever is on the trailer as well, but where it falls short is dust in the dry months. Damn dust seems to get everywhere!
There are arguements for and against every scenario. I've watched guys loading sleds on trailers and wrecking tailgates of pickups...watched a guy dump a new-looking summit off the side of a sled deck and wrecking some plastics and his ego...haha. Yes, alcohol was a factor...lol. Pretty much what matters to me is I like the idea of a sled deck. I'm willing to give it a try, hoping it works out the way I want it too... Encosed trailer is a great way to go, but to buy a 2-place is pointless, and a 4-place (ideal) costs too much to haul around for only 2 sleds. 4 guys in a truck for 1500kms each way is not a picnic for me...not much of a social butterfly. What would be sweet, and I know guys who do this, is to know someone in your favorite riding area who will store the sleds for you, then all you have to do is drive out there with your gear and ride. No deck, no trailering, much less headache, but then the cost of having to store some equipment a distance away where you can't readily use them if you want.

Doh, that would blow!
Worst case scenario it sucks and its new enough ya resell it.
Enclosed trailers are really the best though your right. They are pricey though, which is why I stick to a flat deck. Cheap, mulitple use cause im cheap haha thats it!
The thing I don`t like about having trailers is that the Bobcat trailer is too heavy to tow with just a half ton so I still need to keep my car trailer that sees very little use but is too handy to part with.
I bought my car trailer for 1000 bucks. Its cheap enough to keep around, plus i use it for my mowing a junk hauling side business in the summer. It pays for itself.
I used to use my equipment trailer behind my superduty as well, but it is pretty heavy and ackward. Sometimes ya gotta use what ya got though!
The deck I bought was a repo'd unit, a Bulldog Deck. They're one of the best built on the market. You're right on the money for price Prep. I got a pretty good deal too cause it came with 2 brand new super clamps which are anywhere from 150-200 each. It would be a [easy] sell if I don't like it, but I'm willing to give it a whirl.
Right now I'm looking at a broken sled. Went for a rip with my buddy last night after changing my track. Hit a pretty nice rock, at a pretty decent pace. Sled fared better than most would have, wrecking the right side suspension system and ski, but didn't do anything to the chassis or bulkhead!!! Parts and Insurance time...lol
Good Monday mornin all. Got to work at 7:30 this am, and was busy from the get go. This is the 1st time I've had to chime this mornin. Have a good day and even better week. We're closed next week.
Morris a trailer is usually pretty low maintenance. Its like 50 bucks for plates a year, and as long as ya grease the bearings and change a light every now and then, theres not much to them!
Well worth it to keep one around, for the one time ya need it!
That sucks about your sled Sherm! Is it one of those repairs thats expensive enough to go through insurance and have the premiums rise, or cheap enough to pony up hte dough and fix it out of pocket?
We took our slefs out yesterday for a nice ride, we sure have a fair bit of snow in the fields! I was playing with the carb settings on both of our sleds and dont have them quite right, so today when shelby is sleeping I plan on trying to fiddle a bit and get them dialed in.
