I have been thinking about having Lap Band surgery for a while now. So today my wife and I contacted a Dr here in NC that does this surgery. I have gained so much weight since I had bone marrow transplant that I have come up with so many medical conditions that I can not work. Diabetes,Sleep Apnea, and the onset of high blood pressure, depression, neuropathy (losing feeling in feet and hands). With this surgery I will be off 95% of my meds along with a special diet, exercise program that I will be able to go back to work again.
I would have to say the pros outweigh the risks involved if you have tried diet and exercise. I think the problems you are experiencing that developed with the weight are some serious enough complications, that having the surgery would be of benefit. There are always risks with any surgery. My suggestion is to educate yourself well with the procedure and what to expect afterwards. Surgery is always a tough thing to consider. Heck, I know I need surgery to correct a nasal problem I have causing me to snore something fierce and I can barely breath out of my nose. I have been putting it off for 3 years now and I'm getting to the point of just having it done. So, I'm going to say "go for it" or "don't do it". But, if YOU and YOU ONLY can come up with more benefits than problems, than that will make your decision for you. Like I said, educate yourself and even talk to a couple Doctors if needed. Whatever your decision, good luck to ya and take care.

My step-daughter had the surgery and has been plagued with problems. She was 375 when she had it and is now 85 pounds. She has had multiple infections and after multiple surgeries to remove the infected tissue, her stomach is now the size of an egg. She cannot drink enough fluids to stay hydrated and is in the hospital weekly to get re-hydrated with IVs.
She cannot eat enough food to stay nourished, so they gave her a feeding tube. She is so malnourished that she has lost all her hair, is skeletal in looks and doesn't have enough energy to cross the room to go to the bathroom. We met her for lunch a couple months ago, of which she did not eat, and some friends happened by the same restaurant. They thought she was my husband's mother, not his daughter.
The worst part is that she has had so much pain, that the doctors have turned her into a junkie. She is on Oxycontin, Oxycodone and Methadone, in such large doses that it would kill a normal person.
I asked her the other day, if she knew then what she knew now, would she still do it. She said, "In a heartbeat!"
So, Cliff, only you can really decide what is right for you. It may work out well, it may not. Just so you know, there are risks. Huge risks!!
I feel for you cliff it can not be a good feeling to know that the weight gain is of no falt of yoru own... but i kenw a girl in college who had her stomic stapeled, she had lost lots of weight and didnt have really any problems...but you wont be able to eat much at all at any givin time. but she said she was very happy she did it and it improved her quality of life by so much. I hope what ever you choose to do works out for you and you can get back to work. Good Luck!!!!

Snowbunny did she have the gastric bypass surgery? the Lap Band is reversible. I hate to hear she is going through so many problems.

The band caused an infection and it had to be cut out, but they waited so long that the stomach wall thinned out and leaked acids into her abdominal cavity, which caused further infections. She had four or five surgeries to remove infected tissue and now there's just nothing left of her stomach.
Personally, I think her doctor is a total idiot!! If you have a good doctor, that should make a difference. Try to go to one who has done the procedure on someone you can talk to. I wouldn't go to my step-daughter's doctor for a hang nail!!
Not trying to scare you, Cliff. Just want you to go in with your eyes open to both sides of the story!!
You asked your stepdaughter (''if she knew then what she knew now, would she still do it. She said, "In a heartbeat!").
Even with all of her complications? She would still have the surgery?
Yup, you're reading that correctly. All for the sake of being skinny!!! I would rather be fat!!
When she looks in the mirror she still sees a fat person. Her self image is very distorted!! She reminds me of an anorexic!! I can't stand to go visit her anymore, she is so skeletal she looks like the walking dead. I know it's just a matter of time before her mom calls to say she's dead instead of back in the hospital.

WOW! I'm sorry to hear that.
You (not you personally) can blame it on the media and these
super thin runway models, but that's altogether, a different subject.
Snowbunny,I plan to ask a lot of questions when I go to a seminar that the Dr is holding. He is the only one in NC that takes medicare also he is the only one on the Lap band company site for NC.I have planned to see a dietitian on the 10th of July and ask her a lot of questions.I also have a appointment with my family Dr. to talk to her about it also.I am going to have my wife check out the Dr who does the surgery also.

That's just crazy.
Hope she gets better.
I agree, Ben. Our society has a really screwed up perspective of what's acceptable and beautiful.
Thanks for the well wishes for her, but I just don't see her getting any better. She has no stomach to speak of, so the malnourishment problem will never get any better. That and the massive amount of drugs that she's on, just keep her in a downward spiral. Her body just can't process food any more, even in tiny amounts, and she keeps ripping out her feeding tube. But, I believe the drugs have a more to do with that than the size of her stomach. It's like watching her commit a very slow suicide.
I mean absolutly no offence to you snowbunny, but i personally dont know ANYONE that finds a woman under 100 lbs attractive. I hope your step-daughter can somehow realize that most men dont find that look attractive.

You know Cliff, it may work out for you quite well!! Many have had this procedure and have had their lives given back to them because of it!! As long as your are well informed and understand the risks is all that really matters!! It's your choice and only yours!! I'm not trying to sway you by any means!!
Cora just had a bad run of luck. One infection after another, the doc too slow to respond to her medical needs and then too many pain scripts at the same time is what caused her to be where she is now. It was a vicious cycle that just seems to have no good end for her. Others have done very well!!!
I truly hope you are able to make an informed decision that works well for you!!! I know how frustrated you have been over the last several years at being unable to work!! But, it sounds like you are going in with your eyes wide open.
Cora was so set on being skinny, she didn't care what it took to get there. Well, like I always tell my kids,,, Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.
