I'm also wondering about these gray CPS sensors ...they say they'r meant for later model PSD's but ive used them on the advice of this site .... What other reason is there for no reading from the CPS ... I also noted that everytime I changed the CPS that the old one is wet with oil from the sensor head ... is rthis normal??

There have been some who have had major problems right out of the box with the gray sensor. I am one of them (first lasted 23 hours second about 3 weeks when I put my spare black sensor back in and have yet to have an issue in the last 6 months)
with that said many have had no problems even on the older trucks. If the oil was in the electrical connector that is not normal. If it was just on the tip that is normal as there is oil slinging around in the timing cover.
from your jumping tach issues it possible the CPS is an issue. Its a cheap part to try. Other wise there is still high pressure oil issue (IPR, injector o-ring, injector plucking oil)
Well its going on 2 months and still my truck's not running .... I found out 2 days ago that the IPR Valve that I changed was different from the original one ..... The one I originally had had a closed end but the one I put in had an open end .... I figured I had the problem solved ..... I put the old one back in which was still working when I took it out ..... But no luck no start ..... Im wondering if the wrong IPR did some damage to the pump?? .... is that possible ?? .... also I had a technician use his computer/scanner on the engine and perform a full scan/buzz test .... All injectors passed test .... the problems coming up on his scan was ecm not getting proper reading from CPS sensor .... Ive changed 3 sensors and have ordered a new CPS connector pigtail (Thanks for info tjbeggs) I get a low erratic reading from tach while cranking like maybe about 50rpm's and at times no reading .... Ive always thought that I was one of the smartest guys on the planet but this truck has convinced me that im just a dumb a$$ !!!
Don't know if you have tryed this or not. I was having trouble with my 96 F350 a while back starting and just shutting down without warning. I did a lot of the same thing you have done on your Truck. I got a tip from this site to check the wires on the Starter Solenoid. Pulled wires cleaned and reinstalled problem has not returned. The connections did not look that bad. Just a thought, good luck.
Well im still getting emails when anyone responds to my old post and i do appreciate it .......... Ive sold my PSD shortly after my last post in 2008 and i now own a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 ........... I never got that old girl running and i sold her to a mechanic for $3000.00 bucks ....... He towed her away and i never saw her again and i don't know if he ever got her fixed but she was a good girl to me until she got sick ......... where ever she is may rest in peace.
Thanks Guys!
