First time diesel owner 2004 F-350, DRW. I am looking for a programmer and came across the Edge Evolution that has both digital gauges and some preset tunes. I am not looking for anything "special" just something that gives a little more HP and allows me to watch the gauges when pulling my FW. Lot's of posts on the gas side on this product but not on the "real" truck side. Your thougts? If you don't like the Edge please give me some other ideas.
For a little extra power and gauges, an edge box or six gun would be just fine in my opinion. If you are looking for something that can also work your transmission just a little bit to help the shifting while pulling then you'll want a custom tune with an sct programmer. While the edge box builds decent power it doesn't do anything but harm to a transmission. If you do a search on tuners you'll find that 9 out of 10 users on here prefer an SCT tuner over anything else, me included. I'm sure someone else will chime in also. Welcome to FTE and have fun with the forums, there are a lot of good people on here and there is a lot of great information on here to help you out.
I've run the Edge Evolution (older style) because I was able to get one for like $25 on eBay and so I thought I would give it a shot since it does tune the transmission too. I was very impressed with the power and shifting with the Tow Tune and never went hotter. I did previously have an Edge Juice and sold it before using it because it didn't tune the tranny and lots of people were having problems with them.
As said before, the SCT X2 or X3 is the concensus favorite since they can be custom tuned and they also tune the tranny. There are many great SCT custom tuners out there.....just ask. My next tuner will be an SCT.
The Edge Evolution is a programmer, just like the SCT. The only difference is that it comes with three fairly generic tunes, where you can have anyone write tunes for the SCT.
The Evolution does reprogram both the engine computer and the transmission computer. I think too many confuse the Evolution with the Juice/Attitude. The Evolution downloads new programs into the engine and transmission computers, where the Juice/Attitude intercepts signals going from the sensors to the computers and modifies them, fooling the computer into doing what it wants.
I've had the Evolution on my 2004 6.0 since I bought it. The built in gauges are nice and don't take up much room. I run mine on the Economy program and it runs nice and I run around 17-18 winter and 19-20 summer. If I'm hauling or towing I use the Tow program for the extra pull. The Extreme program frankly scares the **** out of me. I don't need that much acceleration.
If you have the Evolution, make sure to bring it inside, download the software update program from Edge, connect it to your computer via USB and update the programs. You actually get 4 programs now instead of three. They are Transmission Only (only useful for automatics), Economy, Tow and Extreme.
