normally i would be hauling a dirt bike and some camping gear, or something of the sort.
i wonder if it would be worth making a top that come down to about a foot off the bed but has a removable center panel so that just the rear half of the bike would come though?
how terrible is the visor for drag?
seems like it might create a stable vortex and make the air break from the sides more evenly.
i don't know how bad the visors are.i wasn't worried cus i have a massive dump body behind it anyway so it made no difference.
i doubt they effect FE enough to actually measure, not sure though.
hey guys. i made it to wyoming safely. the air dam did WONDERS. my explorer, previously, would consistently get ~14-15 mpg highway. first fill up: 16.3, second: 17.6, third: 18.2, fourth: 19.1, fifth: 18.6, sixth 18.1. all driving was done with the cruise control @ 70 mph on state and interstate highways, except for the last two fill-ups that were clocked @ 80 mph. ill put up another pic i took later.

My 94 Explorer 4 door auto 4wd. STOCK only it doesn't had cat convertor due idiot previous owner who drove with bad engine performance CLOGGED convertor so bad. Mpg on highway 20-24 and city 18-20 in summer.
I believed that lower and put air dam closer to ground but not like that picture. It longer plastic edge you find in garden. Mount on bottom bumper should work.

nice going!
your going to be keeping a lot more $ in your pocket.
i hope to see my turbo bring in at least half what the air dam did.

I plan do this on 94 F150 with 300/5 speed.
mine is bone stock as well. save for true dual exhaust, no kitty, and 31x10.50 tires. oh, and i converted it to a 5 speed. how fast are you driving on the highway?? the best mileage i EVER got was commin off a 14,000 foot summit in colorado. i drove downhill, on 5% grades or better, for two hours. got 32 mpg. after that was 23 drivin 45-55 mph through a snow storm christmas '09. after that, is the 19.1 i mentioned just a couple days ago. in the city, i doubt i get 12, drivin conservatively.
well, im on to the theory that my explorer is loosin 2-5 mpg on the highway due to a bad lifter and injectors. i used to think that the lifter was for an exhaust valve, from the change in exhaust note when it ticks, but im starting to think its on the intake side because it sounds like a complete miss on that cylinder, which would also explain the smell of gasoline after its been runnin for extended periods, but the complete absence of leaks, or unburned exhaust. as for the injectors, they are 19 years old and have 245,000 miles on em. i think its time for new ones. and maybe even a FASS pump.

turbocharger FE:
14.494 mpg over the course of the first 5 tanks.
slightly below my lifetime average of 14.59 mpg (as naturally aspirated.)
not too bad considering she's been grossing 12-16k very, very often on these 5 tanks.plus as you can see in the reports,iv been busy and on the larger roads with 55mph limits vrs 45.so iv been keeping up with traffic.....well,for the most part anyway.55 is faster than i normally drive,so.
i think it's helping.the truck is soooooooooooo much more enjoyable to drive if it's not anyway.
going to bump the timing up 1 degree already to see if i notice anything right off.during tuning,i noticed a much crisper off the line start with 1-2 more degrees advance.
anyone have thoughts on running the n/a ip as far as economy goes? (cus thats the one i have DB2831-5013) the turbo ip with its altered internal timing curve provides for a more efficient burn of the fuel with the turbo correct?
kinda thinking of swapping to the DB2831-5069 turbo ip and ditching the BB's for a set of turbo G's.
too bad we don't have some FE records to follow.it looks like its all on me lol.
first tank w/ turbo: 2012-04-25 Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - Garage FillUp Listing
better details here imho though: http://ecomodder.com/forum/em-fuel-l...vehicleid=5088
one thing that stands right out with the turbo though is the much more closer MPG's to the tanks.
sure some of those are over the same trip/same job.however iv been all over the country side doing side jobs along with a larger job.so it's not the same route all the time or anything.the turbo appears to be evening things out much more constantly without such huge fluctuations.
A university (don't remember which) A normal topper really hurt mileage.
Here is an aerodynamic topper that would work.
Thats not true, My 460 1978 4x4 monster with 37" tires (in my avatar) got 6mpg on the hwy before I put a snug top on it after it got 8mpg driving 70mph and its heavy about 250lbs, With the tail gate up the air fills the hole and the air will flow over it....Mythbusters did it too.
Now if they made that top in a tear drop youd be talking about big gains, Funny how aero the late 60's Vette's were and they didnt have computers.
