I have a 2004 Sport with 75,000 miles, which has been garaged since it had 40k. The rear bumper is rusting BAD and the floor boards and tailgate are starting too. I can get the bumper repainted, but what can I do to stop the rust from getting worse on the floorboards and tailgate?
Wow... that sounds a little unusual. My '04 who has lived in WV its whole life seems rust free, for the moment anyway.
I would suggest grinding on the rust as much as you can and then coating it with POR-15 (after using the metal prep and marine clean of course). Then you can topcoat it back to whatever you want to. Lots of folks in the Early Bronco realm have used POR-15 with great success.
Friend of mine swears by those electronic rust inhibitors, I've never tried one, although I have one in the garage. I may put it on the truck this summer.
ohio, michigan, new york and maryland all seem to have winter cancer problems. My 06 has rust on the rear bumper already. not very please with this, You would think at $40,000 they would make a truck go for a few years before rusting.
better yet, why cant these states stop using salt. nobody uses salt out west. I would like to see these states use sand or something else less corrosive.
Does it not have 5 year warranty from ford on the body for rust?
I believe the 5 yr rust warranty is only applicable to rust through. If he only has surface rust or rust that hasn't eaten through the metal, then I don't think he can make a claim.
my 03 is the same way both bed sides have holes through them from 5 years of north east pa road salt. hopefully this weekend i'll be starting fixing what ford should have done right in the beginning. i will try to post some pics. but on the 99 to 04 s/d's between the inner and outer panels there is a foam adhesive that hold dirt, salt, moisture, and pretty much anything that can get in there. i already cut out the rusted spot to see what was the cause for it and noticed the foam type adhesive or sealer. the newer 05 an up trucks don't appear to have the foam between the two panels. i'm going too put two new bedsides on my truck and por 15 the inside of the new panels so they'll hopefully last longer than when it was built.
I got some light rust spots under along the floor boards where the tires throw up evertything but its light. I will be sanding it down abit when i get a chance before it gets out of hand. Not that bad yet. I know what you mean Ben8892002, deal with it every winter.
