I've got a 79 bronco and the transfer case is skipping sounds like the chain is tearing the teeth off the gears.
Is this an np205?
Any recommendations for a replacement, stronger, gear driven, lower gearing?
Verify the type of case that you actually have.
NP 203's will have a chain, and 205's are all gear. I find it difficult to believe that the 205 is torn up.
Have seen them break, but it is rare.
I'm not sure Type of case, does anyone know what is stock on a 79 bronco?
I think it's a 205, I have heard they are bulletproof but it skips out of low range.
Could be what Nick said, or possibly the linkage isn't putting it all the way in 4 lo and it's not catching/grinding gears.
The NP203 and NP205 both came in 78 79 Broncos.
NP203 is a huge 300 lb full time chain driven transfer case with adjustable linkage and 2.01:1 Lo range. It also has a range box with is basically like a open differential with spider gears to split the power between front and rear axles. It was a pretty popular thing to convert them to part time 4wd, but some kits were better than others....
The NP205 is gear driven and basically bullit proof with 1.96:1 Lo range.
Thanks for the pics and info but I'm in Dallas and the truck is in Phoenix I haven't been under the truck in two years so can't remember what it looked like. I'm trying to decide if it's worth shipping it to texas.
Ok I remember, 4 lo- n -2 hi- 4 hi, cause I was disappointed that it didn't have 2 lo like my landcruiser used to. Thanks MBBford, now at least I know it's an np205.
Ok my memory is coming back a bit, it would skip and bang under a hard load, ie:deep mud or heavy foot on a steep incline, but worked fine under normal loads. Also shift lever never popped out of gear, just lighten the load and it was good to go.
I'm assuming that quadzjr. is correct that the driveshaft slip joint is skipping. Does this mean my driveshaft is too short or what?
its very uncommon for a 205 to be blown up beyond simple repair. Id suspect its a linkage not allowing it to fully engage in gear or maybe a slipping yoke like Nick said.

no, just lack of maintenence (grease) and it will wear out over time......had it happen to my front dshaft in my white truck.......along time ago it seems........happened in the absolute worse possible time....IN the st. johns river....storm coming in, didn't quite make a ditch crossing in 2wd (again, friends are worthless), water OVER the back of the bed, front way up in the air.......sucked, at least i got the front out....
if its the dshaft, you will be able to move it back in forth and get hella play.......it was kinda a reminder for me if i ever left my hubs locked in on the road.......def. some vibration issues.....at high speeds.
