351W Engine Noise

I own an '89 Bronco w/ a 351W engine with 180,000 miles. She runs real strong and quiet while putzing around town and while going downhill but on a long uphill drag I detect some lifter noise. The noise goes away when I lift off the gas. Whatcha think guys? What should I be looking at here and what would you recommend. I am running 10w/30 oil now that it's kinda cold out. This past summer I was running straight 30. I am in the mountains of AZ and it gets to maybe 20 at night so I think I could safely switch back to straight 30 if ya think it might help. Please let me know!

I think you might be getting a little spark knock.
Check to see if your timing is advanced a bit too much.

351W Engine Noise

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Jan-02 AT 10:13 PM (EST)]Yeah, I would guess it is in the timing...but you've got something that is advancing the timing more than it should to try and compensate for something...like bad oxygen sensor, or throttle position sensor, or some type of EGR malfunction, or dirty injectors...I'll bet if you jump up to the next higher grade of gas, the knock will go away...but that's treating the symptom and not identifying the real problem.

I guess that the above suggestions are making sense to me now 'cause the noise I hear just started about the time I was experiencing intermittant flashing of the "check engine" light. Now I just gotta try to determine just what's wrong. Thanks guys!

In my experience, the only times I've seen a check engine light it's been related to O2 sensors. Have you pulled engine codes yet? Probably a good plce to start.
Later,
Ben
