Diesel engine type noise

hey guys i just overhauled my 351w, put in everything new, water, oil pump new pistons (in 30) block was opened to .30, new cam shaft, timing kit, the whole 9 yards. i used the truck for about 1k miles and decided to take a road trip.
i was heading to el paso from ABQ and stop in a small town 60 miles from el paso and notices my truck was leaking antifreeze, i checked it out and it was leaking from the front engine cover, i took it to a mechanic there in town and replaced the cover in about 3 hours.
i drove the truck for 500 miles and noticed that the temp on my gauge was climbing bit more then before the repair so i checked fluids in a gas station close to san antonio and notice that the truck had no oil what so ever, immediately i put 5 qrt of oil and the truck worked fine. in san antonio (150 miles after) i changed the oil and it came out completely black. after this oil change the truck is making a light noise like a diesel engine when running over 65mph.
please tell me my whole engine is not messed up.
Thanks

Yeah I would stick a mechanical gauge on it and see what it reads but doesn't sound good might of spun a rod bearing could try a little bit thicker oil to try and prolong its life just a idea
