i did a vacuum test on my truck today. it had a rapid vibration and the book said it could be worn valve guides if it smoked to. but the truck only smokes when you hammer down on it. so could that be the guides if it is how hard are they to replace. can you do it yourself?
Does it smoke a little when you start in in the mornings? That's an obvious sign of valve guides.
Is the smoke black or grey/white when you mash the gas?
Grey/white is oil and your rings are worn.
Black is a rich carb.

My friends say I'm too old to play with toys.
I need new friends
Valve guides are best left to a mchine shop. Unless you have access to a head machine or a really really good mill. Besides the machine shop can warranty their work or modify the heads while your having the guides replaced.
If the vacum fluctuated from 9hgs to 16hgs.It could be anything.A bad rockerarm, bent push rod, worn cam lobes.Take valve covers off and see if the rockers are rockin. And do compression check
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Jan-02 AT 10:00 PM (EST)]ill do a commpression test when i go back to votech monday. i wondering my number 6 cyl is dead i can pull the wire off of the can and it doesnt change the idle any. the engine is a 351w
If the compression test is good.150 psi. Then recheck the firing order. It could be wired for a 302.Theres a slight differance in the firing order between the two engines.Post back
The firing order you wrote is for a 351.I didn't even know if you had a v-8 when I responed to your post.I would verify then #1 postion of rotor/cam/piston 1st,then do firing order for whatever engine you have. That would possibly explain why your engine smokes....maybe???I have gotten engines to run with firing orders all jacked up and distribters put in wrong..
