Question Code reader/scanner for 95?

I'm interested in getting some sort of code reader or scanner. I was thinking AE, but then I read about the scan guages and that seemed like a less expensive route since AE also requires a laptop. My new concern is that my 95 may not be compatible with either AE or the scan guages. I've read that you can get the PCM reflashed to a newer version and then the scanners will work. Anyone done this? Are there any alternatives to AE or scan guages that would work for my rig?
