Is this vehicle to old to be used with AE and OBDII stuff? I can not get it to connect, and I am thinking the cut off date is right around in there somewhere? If it is too old, what are my options with other types of code scanning software?
1996was the first year OBD-2 was required. Rumor has it that a few models over all manufacturers got OBD-2 before then. The vast majority of '95 Explorers are EEC-IV/OBD-1 (The OBD-2 port under the steering wheel, if present, is inactive). The EEC-IV self-test connectors are under the hood, driver's side fender, I believe.
If you can count flashes of the check engine light, a paper clip is all that is required to get codes. Ken00 has an article with instructions in his tech info post at the top of the BII and Ranger forums. You could also put Ford EEC-IV self-test into your favorite search engine and you'll find several pages. Any self-respecting repair manual will also have the test protocol.
