hey guys i am looking at a 1993 ford f-250 4wd truck that has a bad 460 motor in it but i have a perefectly running 1970 429 motor sitting here on the engine stand can i swap everything over and put it in the 93 f-250 with out any problems. hope to hear from you guys soon. thx ray.

 

it will probably work, the only thing I can think of is you might have to put the 460 heads on it because of the fuel injection

 

pretty much what I did. . .except my '87 is carb'd to begin with so I didn't need to swap the EFI heads like you will.

The only real snag is making sure you have some way to add a NEUTRAL BALANCE flywheel to the back of your motor. The early 460's are all internal balance, and after 79 became external balance and make horribly destructive vibrations when you mix and match drive trains like that.

You might be able to just have your flywheel/flexplate rebalanced at a shop if you can't by one neutral balance

 

ok, well the 429 came out of an auto and the truck is an auto also. so i might not have to many problems with changing them out i'll just have to see if they match up.

 

The 429 heads will not fit a 460.

 

are you positive. the 429 and 460 are the same engine family matter of fact you can put the complete rotating assembly from a 460 into a 429 block. the only difference i could see possibly is like the other poster had said the fuel injected heads may be different. but im not going to use the 460 heads unless i have to anyways id prefer to keep my dove-c heads. if it wont work i may just make it carburated.i have everything for the 429 already. we will see i pick it up on sunday i got the truck for 350.00 with new tires. i'll post pics when i get it over here.thx ray.

 

Just out of curiosity what are the differences between the EFI and non-EFI heads, is it water passages or something?

Even if the 460 intake bolts on the 429, it's likely the cam isn't computer compatable, most performance cams for carburated motors have too much valve overlap.

 

The differences between the EFI and non-EFI heads have to do with the alignment of the intake ports, and the size and shape of the exhaust ports. The misalignment of the intake ports is about 1/4-3/8" of an inch, certainly noticable and not condusive to good airflow.

If you want the best of both worlds, find yourself a set of 460 industrial heads. Many Ford engines (300-460) were used in stationary pumping, generator and hydraulic applications as well as in cart-mounted "starters" for jets. Many larger farm machines use the 460 as well - combines, bailers and so forth.

Why this suggestion might you ask? The exhaust ports are much larger like the older heads (not quite as big as the famous CJ heads but machinable to those dimensions), and the intake side lines up almost perfectly with the 460 truck EFI intake.

I'd offer casting numbers but my set is buried in the attic at the moment to protect them from damage by sitting on the garage floor.
