Is this a 429 from a medium duty truck, or an old car engine?
Internal balance 385 's will require a zero balance flywheel.
This was a running change during the 1979 model year.
460 trucks never came with manual gearbox until '83, so all truck flywheels are external balance.
Big snout 429 engines are not going to fit in your pickup chassis.
the motor is out of a 68 t bird im looking to put either a 4 or 5 speed trans in what flywheel do i need to use i know that the 429 is external balance what size clutch should i us 12 inch ?
Not sure why the internal balance part escaped me.

Were they only automatic before this?
The t-bird motor will work. You will need an external balance manual trans flywheel. Yes 12" is what you should use.
There were only automatic 460 trucks until hydraulic clutches in '83.
ALL pre-79 engines were internal balance.
If it's really out of a car you need a zero balance flywheel.
Easiest is to bring the entire rotating assembly to a crankshaft shop and have the flywheel zeroed.
Get a flywheel for an '88 and up manual 7.5l truck.
This will be drilled for the ZF pressure plate. There *IS* a difference from the earlier BW gearboxes.
You need a manual starter too...
