They would get better mileage if the trucks didnt weigh 6000lbs, thats cause everyone wants trucks that have all these fancy options

for those of you that are saying your 78' bla bla bla gets 23 mpg.... throw a ton of sand in it and drive around ....i know it will get worse millage than these trucks do....

its cause all new trucks are fat pigs... for hauling people safely and comfortably...

More weight does not automatically make a truck safer. And there are ways to make the interior components (like seats) lighter without costing as much as you might think, not that luxury items are really the loin's share of the added weight. By the same token, more weight in an older truck will not make as big a difference in MPG as you might think. Wind drag matters more on the highway.

Take a new ford F150 and park it next to that 1978 ford. Which one has the larger tires? Which one has the larger frontal cross section? I am one of those who brings up older trucks (including my 6.9L diesel) in conversations about MPG vs Hp that new engines offer. This is not something that always goes over well, but really, why is a 1978 ford getting BETTER MPG than the most advanced truck on the market.

This is a sad development in my opinion, sure new trucks are getting bigger and bigger with more and more power. But thats all they are at the end of the day, big and powerful. For all the extra high tech systems they still burn at least as much fuel as 30 year old trucks. Am I the only one who thinks something is wrong with this picture?

believe what you want but engines are much more efficient than they used to be, its the pig trucks that are wrapped around them holding the fuel mileage down.

Give me only 200 HP and 30 MPG and I will buy. HP is meaningless. Torque is what matters anyway.

I had two excellent 78 Ford Pickups back when they were still considered late models. One was a F-100 302/Automatic 4X2 and the other was a F-150 351/auto 4X2. They both has far less power and used more gas than my 04 F150 5.4/auto 4X4. The 04 is far quieter, smoother and will haul a much heavier load. Thank goodness they don't make them like they used to.

I don't have any official data for the 1978 F150 that was mentioned. But if you look up the MPG ratings for the 1985 F150 and compare that to the 1992 F150 the older truck gets better MPG........why?

Both were manual transmission, 4.9L, 2wd.

I will not attempt to defend the MPG of a 302, I have one and its not good on fuel. Its reliable, but the best I ever got was 13 MPG (LPG kills some MPG though).

rating scales might have changed.... they didnt fluff it as much....who knows.... i had an 82 f-150 4x4 reg cab short bed with the 4.9l.... the thing was a stump puller.... loved that truck to death....but it only got 13 mpg at best... and was extremely slow when compared to my current truck and it had trouble going over 80mph on the interstate....

All the MPG estimates are adjusted to reflect the most recent standard of testing. If you click on the specific vehicle in the list of available versions, you will see the changes that were made to the mileage estimate.

Here they are:

Find a Car (1985 F150)

Find a Car (1992 F150)

The numbers show there is a big penalty in MPGs if you had the C6 auto.

When people use there truck to make a living....as a truck not a daily get me to work vehicle they do care about mileage. MPG should be a major concern. I truly hate filling up the truck when it costs $75 to do so. I use it as a truck when I need a truck but twice the MPG half the HP and the same Torque would get the job done just as easily. My 79 300 got over 20mpg, and I still towed 10K, it wasn't fast but I still got where I needed to go. I really think if ford or any other the other guys built a truck that could get 20-30MPG it would sell. The formula to do that is low HP high torque and lots of gears to get to speed. Why not build a truck like that for those of us who do care about the arabs taking our whole paycheck. I am not saying they can't still build a truck with 300-400hp for other people with their heads up their azzes, but for those of us that us a truck to make a living the mpg does make 1 hall of a difference.

Could you provide a source for your information or are you just trying to bait him?

I was able to find some stats ( Oil Industry Statistics from Gibson Consulting ) from 2004 that showed we produced domestically about 4.85 MBPD of the approximately 20 MBPD of crude oil that we use daily. That's about 24%. The rest comes from imports. Not all from Arab countries but a pretty large amount ( Crude Oil and Total Petroleum Imports Top 15 Countries ).

I think it is kind of funny you blaming "greedy Americans" for the high price of oil yet you brag about not caring about how much gas you use. Isn't that greed?

So, back on topic.....anyone been able to verify the HP numbers of the 2009?

Looks smelly....

I've owned Corvettes, a couple Chrysler Hemi cars including a 12-second Hemi Cuda--you run faster than that? Or is that an autocrosser truck?

Honestly, I dearly love trucks (and locomotives, and 747's) for the work they do, but it's kind of silly to hotrod them so they'll run as fast as a mid-range car, and they'll never go around a corner with exceptions like a Roush truck or a Lightning--but those are still no match for a Mustang GT. It's kind of like taking a Mustang and modifying it to carry 5,000 lbs of cargo or taking a hammer and modifying it to saw wood.... (An exception, and something I think would be fun, would be putting a big-inch small block into a Ranger with wheel tubs, keeping it quiet, and using it as a street sleeper...although I gave up street racing many years ago.)
