Holding overdrive while towing

I have a question. I have searched the forums and didn't find what I was looking for. What determines when the tranny down shifts? I would like the tranny to hold OD when towing just a little longer. Seems that it will down shift after it loses 3-4 miles an hour and I would like to double that. Educate me please!

Cruise control or no cruise control?

I ask because in my towing experiences with my V10 Ex...you will NEVER easily hold OD with cruise on...it takes a soft feathering of the foot something cruise will not do for you...

The PCM makes the decision on when to downshift. The two main inputs to this decision are accelerator position and vehicle speed. When cruise control is on it creates a simulated accelerator position that is used in place of actual pedal position.

To change this behaviour you need a custom chip or programmer.

Dude your concern is mine too! I wish I had a switch I could flip that would leave the trans in OD so I could go WOT on smaller hills and not downshift like you can do with a manual trans. THere has to be a way! I know my 6.0 would pull the smaller hills in OD, man that would be nice.

I didn't miss that..............Can you be a little more specific, does ATS make a controller for the 5 speed at?????? Or does the SCT have an option for manual control to a certain point?

I know it may seem to simple, but I just hit the button as the speed starts to drop off on the big hills. If it isnt a long grade I just let it lug a little as long as the EGT's and tranny temps dont get too high.

I agree with you, I can keep it in OD without cruise but you really need to pay attention. I found that if I use the cruise and go ahead and give it a little more gas just before I get to the bottom of a hill, I can usually hold OD. It just seems to need a little bit of help.

I don't know what the aftermarket makes, you'll need to call several companies and ask them.

I suspect you'll need to find someone that will make a custom program for what you want. It won't be cheap.

You are absolutely correct. I know with 4.10' or 4.30's my 6.0 would be a towing beast and would stay in OD in the hills! I just don't want the higher highway rpms when not towing... I will have to call ATS or Suncoast and see what they offer if anything................

Or I can install a 6 speed manual, which is what I would really like to do!! That seems that it would be pricey though! Anyone done this yet?
