My Father In-law has a 2012 f-350 Dually with 4K miles. He tows a 9K lb camper and until our last trip the truck ram flawlessly.
On our return from Myrtle Beach to central NC we were on a freeway traveling at 63 MPH and his tranny would not shift into 6th gear. Tow haul was on. There was some headwind (10MPH) but no large grades or any reason we can think of not to allow an up shift. His display did show a countdown to empty of the exhaust fluid 450 miles to empty.
He took the truck in for service and no codes were found. Dealer did not find any TSB's addressing the tranny issues.
Is the sixth gear up shift in tow haul set very conservative? Does it hold 5th unless the load is below a certain value?
Other trips we have been on have been mountain towing so 6th gear shift would have been on down hill or level sections.
Any info is greatly appreciated. Dealer wants us to bring it to them when it won't up shift next time but dealer is not along a freeway.
In tow haul it is relatively hard to get it to upshift to 6th while towing. You have to be on flat ground with little head wind and eas off the throttle until it shifts then you can get back in to the throttle. Or you can manual shift it to 6th in M mode
In tow/haul the truck keeps the RPM up & ready for some throttle (pulling) so if its in 6th the engine gets lazy (low RPM).........so it wont shift up unless it's at high speeds on level ground........
Yep, yep, yep, and more yep. I agree with all the above. While in T/H mode, the shift points are adjusted to keep the RPM's in the upper envelope of the individual shifting range of each gear. When I want it to upshift and it keeps hanging on to the higher rpm's longer than I want, I just disengage T/H, then re-engage it for the down-grade braking feature, or to get ready for the next uphill.
Thank You, I tried it out last night and found out that you can lock out more then just 6th. I gotta say that the transmissions in these trucks are really nice.

Yep. The only thing it lacks is locking out at least 1st in drive.
When you're in manual mode, you'll notice the transmission only downshifts on it's own to 2nd gear which is nice when empty.
Thanks for all the feedback. We are taking it out today empty to see what it does in tow/haul. If it works normally we will hook up the trailer and see what it will do.
