i played with the ram mounting this weekend but didnt get anything accomplished. i was not able to bend any tube as it was raining. my bender is mounted to a big ole piece of hickery timber (20" by 20") and to hold it down I set my skidsteer on the opposite end and it usually keeps it in place. i have a nice long weekend coming up with no girl in town and the barn to myself so i really hope to get it going.
I am open to any and all suggestions. as soon as i get the ram mounted i should be able to finish it out
*sigh* still nothing. i dont like any setup i have mocked up or really even thought of. the advantage most have over my setup is i am running radius arms and moist run a link style suspension up front.
how strong would welding to cast be? i hate the idea but the nice flat cast spring pad on the drivers side is absolutey perfect, except its cast! i am terrified it will snap or crack my housing!
People weld cast all the time with good results. I know what youre saying though.
Why not do it like I said in post 15 but instead of welding it to the center section cut a plate to match the diff cover with a L shaped piece of angle that comes back over axle to mount it.

Does that makes sense?
BTW,
what happened to KO?
lemme ask you, would you feel confident welding to cast given the proper rod (nickel I am assuming), pre-and post-heat, and gussets connecting the middle of the mount to the steel axle tube?
you mean a plate to fit b/t the cover and the housing and let all the bolts help hold the mount? heck, hadnt thought of this but i could weld the other end to my diff cover (3/8" diamond plate steel) and have my mount removable, like with a couple of bolt on flanges.
he has changed hobbies, not sure if its b/c of the new girl or not... i just know i miss out on the trail! plus he has been building a house. to be honest havent called him in a couple of weeks. might just have to call him in the AM and wake his sorry rear up!
The last I heard of KO he was selling his truck but I thought he was building a buggy to replace it.
Its a shame. He was a damn good guy and very knowledgeable.
noooo, he is getting away from wheelin 'for a while'! and actually, he's parting the truck out. he tried to sell it on ebay a couple of times but i dont think it went well (well for him at least, good for me, lol). we'll see which way he goes! no buggy but i think he would like to build one one day! i think i am bringing another one of my buddies into the wheeling world though! he's into toyotas so i have been helping him find one so he will go with me! i dont have anyone local to ride with anymore, they either quit or moved away!
Fishy,
there is a trail ride/rock crawl group from Charleston SC that Ive kinda 'hooked up' with. They are all real good guys and fun to hang around. They have a couple obstacles set up (big culvert pipes and junk like that) on some property here as well as a full out trail in the upstate (Laurens) I think. If youre interested Ill give you their website. Its a real small forum kinda like this but its mostly local guys who just BS. Dont expect tech.
sweet! i am always interested! in fact i wouldnt mind taggin along next time they head out some where if its not too terribly far. i have been wanting to try Gulches!
do they have any good pics of where they mounted their rams? lol
