tell me about it, it use to be if u wanted to make your dirtbike legal all u had to do was buy a baja kit (brake lights, turn signals, and a horn) and register it. now CA says no more. so now i have to buy the kit, register my bike in nevada for 1 year, then bring it back over. CA blows lol

Im with Robert on this - Most emission laws are scare tactics. Have never seen someone get busted for no cat (not saying it doesn't happen) let alone something called a "diesel particulate filter" lol. The only thing i have heard of is tanks getting dipped. If your not blowing black smoke out your tailpipe and sounding like you have a 5" straight piped system...you should be fine.

Granted we're a fleet, but the CHP has actually came to our yard and performed an opacity test on ALL of our diesels (Pickups, Semi's AND GENSETS!!). They were accompanying the CARB. I think all but one of our rigs passed though.

My work truck (99 Dodge 2500, 5spd Cummins 4x4) Test Results:
WAGER Model 6500
Stack Size: 3.0
HP Rate 100 to 200
TEST1: 1.6
TEST2: 1.4
TEST3: 1.4
AVERAGE: 1.5
SPREAD: 0.2
PASS

I read supeRobertduty's posts, and while it sounds all good, the CHP does these stops in my area. They just recently did a CHP roadside check and they stopped ALL diesels, 1st thing they checked was for red dyed diesel in the tank (with these prices I bet more than a few are doing that). Then they did visuals on the emissions, mostly looking at cat converters, etc. (easy stuff). A friend of mine runs a dump truck and was pulled over -- he got a no fine fix-it ticked (like superRobert said) for having the WRONG emissions sticker under the hood! (he said they were right too).

I phoned one of my friends that has straight piped his '05 Cummins and warned him not to go down that road (main hwy thru town, hard to avoid).

The CHP may not have the training, but I wouldn't want even a fix it ticket. The first test (for the red dye) is for the Board of Equalization and the fines are huge. The second checks are for CARB/EPA, and they are so entertwined with our CA DMV, I bet they'd love to give out a huge fine too. In separate stops they've also had portable scales for weighing the big rigs (now this one I know is in the CHP's domain).

While we don't have emissions testing for our light duty trucks in CA, my bet is it isn't far away. Look at how much money the government isn't getting all in the name of cleaning up the air!

I've kept all my exhaust stock just out of fear that Ford would deny warranty on some unrelated part...

Someone who is capable of testing auto window glass for too much tint or vehicles or stereos for too much noise would not likely have too many issues getting equipped and trained to test diesel exhaust for opacity.
This isn't like testing and documenting whether a diesel meets any given prior years emission standards, if the particulate filter is in place and functioning, well there shouldn't be any particulates.

So , If a vehicle is Smog Exempt but still needs smog for a surprise roadside check, I guess the muscle car / Hot Rod scene is Dead.

Also : Big Rig Diesel and Fleet are Whole other thing.
Personal comsumer use pickup was my focus

The CHP may not be trained to do the "check" but they are trained to pull you over to be checked. I have driven by these "stops" and assume it is CARB or ARB guys doing the actual testing.

Yes the CHP can give you a FIX ticket for anything:
Unsafe height , to loud ,Tinted windows, Smog ect...

Its A FIX Ticket , like tinted windows No 10k Fine No JAIL Time . That's my POINT.

Also Note: In the wonderful state of C.A .if you do not want to fix it , Don't. The fix ticket turn into a fine . just pay the fine and move on. Never even touch your truck.

I hear ya', but my truck says it's CA and 50 state emissions compliant and (I'm paraphrasing here) not to screw with the emissions, as it's against the law. My sticker calls for a Cat Converter, my '99 called for one too (it was an early '99 PSD).

Most of the hot rods fall under the 25+ year smog exempt rule, I believe. I think we are crossing: no smog check required, with smog exempt (which my '72 911 is, even with the '88 motor in it)...

Not happy with the rules, just not happy getting caught either. I think I more likely would mess around if Ford wasn't so trigger happy with the warranty these days...

well.. after considering all this, for now i think il just put a 6 inch pipe out after the dpf and have it exit just before the rear tire. add an s&b intake and mabey we can get some noise!

Point taken and for us out here in the cheap seats its only speculation what they do or will do in California.

My point is that this is an emission standard change like no other that I recall in history. I would not bet against them deciding to go after "smoking" 2007 and newer emission standard diesels much like they have gone after second hand cigarette smoke.

And maybe if they catch enough of us, and enough of us really get pissed, we will be able to knock some sense into them about this DPF crap. Oh, sorry I must have drifted off to sleep I think I just said something about the EPA/DEQ and sense, that will never happen.
The good thing for those of us outside of California (other than being outside of California) is that whatever happens will happen there first. So if all those guys start getting tickets, we should have time to decide what we want to do.

I think Smog test's for diesels are coming soon here in la la land. But for now Exempt means Exempt. A 1969 camaro came with a smog pump. But its exempt from smog like diesels. does it matter weather its Removing a PDF or a Smog pump from a 69 .both are exempt. Both came with smog from factory. and The law can give a FIX Ticket on Anything they want.

fair enough -- I've just never seen/heard of the CHP doing random checks on muscle cars (or any other classic smog exempt car), and checking for smog pumps and other period smog equipment -- whereas I've both seen myself and heard stories from others about them doing it on diesels (probably 'cause they're easier to catch?!)...
