Hello all!! I am just getting into the whole mod thing with my recently purchased 02 PSD and just completed the Zoodad mod. As I was reading over this post one thing kept coming to mind (as I debate the 6637 mod), and I mean no disrepect to anybody, but why would we take out the factory air box, put in a 6637 filter and then fabricate a totaly new box to get the same fresh air from the same location (zoodad holes) when we basicaly had the same set up that we tore out of the truck? Is it the filter that makes this mod all worth while, since when you look at the end product of this new mod, the 6637 filter is the only difference? Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!
PS. I said it on my first post and I will say it again...THIS SITE ROCKS!! It has to be by far the most informative and educational site ever. I am just amazed at how people on here would just give there 2 left rear lug nuts to help a fellow Ford fan out!!
Because there is WAY more surface area on the 6637 filter vs the stock. I am too lazy to measure and do the math, but I would guess it is at least 3 times more. This increased surface area creates more airflow and better filtration. When you do the cold air 6637 mod it should create cooler intake air and thus a little more hp. The cold air mod should cut down on the drown (that my unrefined ears can't hear) and other intake noises.
It's way worth it. I did the 6637 and I am very glad I did. I can not only feel the difference but I can hear it as well. I will be making a custom intake box very soon. I bought the pop rivet gun and the tin snips. Now I just have to get the sheet metal cut from the local metal shop tomorrow and then I'll get to work. To add to what Scott is saying. I'll go ahead and say what everyone that reads this thread is thinking--> The stock intake sucks compared to the 6637! Good luck and feel free to ask any more questions.
Speaking of questions. I need a 45* 4" elbow so that i can properly fit my 6637 into the box I am making. Any suggestions on where I can get one that wont be ridiculously expensive? Asked the muffler shop for one. They had it but wanted 50 bucks for it !
Maybe even some info on where I can get a longer rubber intake pipe? As you can see in the picture below, It's just not quite long enough to make that bend to fit properly in the space provided. Thanks!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions, and no one here gets offended when you do. There are lots of opinions on what type of air filter and intake set up is best, with many variables that can be factored into the equation.
One thing most agree on however is the stock airbox set up is poorly designed. The lid does not always seal down to the box as well as it should, especially when it gets older or when you run higher boost levels. If the lid does not seal to the box, then you're getting unfiltered air to the turbo. At that point, any filter is better than the stock box.
Cold air intakes are popular for many reasons, the 6637 filter is just a cheap DIY version of an expensive CAI. Most run it without a box around it. I put the box there due to a drone sound on certain stretches of highway.
You don't have to choose the 6637 filter, but do keep an eye on the lid above your stock filter and the tube going from the filter back to the turbo. At the first sign of any dust in the lid or tube, find yourself a different filter set up.
This return to this thread made me realize I have all the parts broken apart into pdfs for printing / taping together with orientation marks, as well as full 24 x 36 pdfs if anyone needs them. Maybe someone can post them up somewhere for future downloads?
What we need is for Ron's powerstroke to make an outline of the top of his set up. That would give the patern of the hood line and insure a seal for the stuff we are trying to fab. "copying is the sincerest form of flattery" or something like that.
Thanks for the replies! It all make perfect sence now. I guess the main issue I saw with the 6637 mod was once you removed the factory box and just lay the new 6637 filter in the engine compartment, the turbo was ingesting the warm air under the hood but when you left the factory box in place you were not getting alot of air (due to the smaller factory filter) but it was mainly cool "outside" air I was just trying to weigh out the advantage/disadvantages of the mod. The way I see it now, after the replies is we should make it an unwritten rule...if you are going to do the 6637 mod you also have to build yourself one of these new boxes

The cold air factor on diesels (or most things with turbos) has been debatted heavily due to the extreme heating of the air by the compressor side of the turbo. This was one of ErnestEugene's favorite rants a few years back. The moral of the story is when taking in air that is 10-15 degrees cooler and heating it 80-100 (? I forget just how much it was heated) degrees does it really matter any more!?! I personally think any little bit can't hurt.
