So I've been reading about bdrummonds & Rampage_F350 building a cold air set up for the 6637. I had some spare time Friday afternoon (& access to a sheet metal shop) so I quickly threw something together to use as a starting point.
I don't know how cold this set up really needs to be. I was hoping for ideas and suggestions on things I should have done differently. Brandon suggested I put the pics up and ask all of you.
So here's what I came up with on my first attempt using 24 ga. metal. I'll probably jump to a heavier gauge once I figure out what this is supposed to look like. I looked at a picture on the internet of a AFE set up and went out and built this.
More pics in my gallery. Comments and suggestions are welcome.
Chris that looks pretty neat, it will turnout good at this rate. Ol Brandon and Chris are going to have some competition now. Very detailed write up how much time do you have figured into this. Do you have a Zoodad on your truck and does this aim the air from it into it?
that looks sharp Chris..i would try to seal around the intake tube a little better..is there a bottom to it??? also..im not sure how close to the hood you are..but some tall rubber door sweep strips from low's or HD would help seal the hood with out hurting eather the box or the hood...i left you some rep's...nice job...maybe this pic will help
Looks great so far, but here's my suggestion- instead of trimming the steel around the intake tube, I would poke a 4" hole in it and have the 4" tubing used to adapt the 6637 to the intake feed through the hole. Not sure if that would be possible or not, but it would probably help with cold air somewhat.
Great job though, I'll send reps if it will let me. Any interest in making a second one once you finalize the design?
That AFE set up looks pretty good Ron, you and Chase are right. If it could be set up like the AFE have the hole sealed off it would work alot better.
thanks..the rubber seal on top of mine is like 1 1/2 tall so there is room for the box not to hit the hood.. it leaves a mark on the matt under the hood.. but doesnt crush it..
Let the games begin. Looking good so far. Ron, is there any way to keep the battery box with your setup? I want to keep original as much as possible.
I will be watching you guys. Great stuff.
mine has a full floor from the inner fender out..and from the master cylinder to the head light...there is a spot for the battery built in..mine gets all the air directed to the filter from the grill with the zood dad and the inner fender...just so happens..my early 99 has a snorcle for the inner fender...it draws air from in front of the front tire.. but i need to plug it for the winter...
OK lot's of questions. Hope I don't miss any. Ron, that's the kind of pic I was looking for. I remembered seeing it somewhere but had to go off of an uninstalled pic from the internet.
It took 30 - 45 minutes to piece the box together Friday, and about an hour of tinkering with the finding the right spot and putting the door closure trim on. I don't have a zoodad (too scared about letting water in) but I angled the box towards that area since that was where the factory box drew air from.
Since the 6637 is so big, I left the slot so you could slide the filter up to change it. If I just used a hole, how would I get the filter out? I guess I could add a slide in cover. I just don't know how important that really is. I figured I probably will add the rubber door sweep across the top once I settle on a final design.
Any other comments or suggestions are welcome. I'll answer any questions I can. I sent these pics to Brandon & Chris last night. I also stuck a tape measure on the box in several of the photo's in the gallery in case anyone wants to make their own.
