Great beginnings, Chris. Thanks for taking the initiative to work on this and post up your progress. I'm sure that you're going to have some folks wanting to pay youto build one for them before this is all over.

Thanks Pete. I think shipping would be the difficult part on that. If I can get some more input as to what I've done wrong I'll post the how to pics in my gallery so folks can build this themselves.

So far all I have invested is $5 in sheet metal and $3 in the plastic trim.

That makes for a pretty inexpensive mod, Chris. Great going.

Thanks for the kind words and rep points.

Does anyone else have suggestions on what to do to make the next one better? Ron sent me some additional photos of his AFE (Post #4) so I've got a few ideas on what to do next, but without changing the intake tube and switching to a smaller filter we can't copy his design exactly. I'd like to hear more comments about what I've done wrong before I try again.

Thanks again Ron.

Chris, it looks like your version is getting there. Since I seem to be dragging my feet with my version, PM me with your address and I'll make/send a copy of Ron's AFE template to you. All Brandon and I are going to do is modify the AFE design slightly to accomidate the 6637 filter. We're hoping to get a chance to work on it this Spring.

I think that thing is looking good for a first shot. The thing that I always think about when looking at cold air intakes and having read about the better performing ones in the mustang scene, they are usually made out of plastic as opposed to metal. The metal ones tend to act as a heat sink and make the air much warmer than the plastic ones do. Something to think about. I like what you have done though.

I agree with you Jason. Once I get a pattern figured out I'll play with a heat lamp and infra red thermometer to determine temperature differences between the metal and the factory plastic air box. Then we can determine what to do from there once we know what temp differences we're dealing with.

Instead of having a hole thru. We need a plate that slides into place with 4" tubing attached that has the filter on one side and the intake tube on the other. I dont really know how to explain it any better, but it would allow the filter to slide into place while maintaining a seal between the box and the engine comp.

That gives me something to think about. How tight of a seal do you suppose we need? We're not worried as much with air leaks as we are radiant heat right?

Tell you what, We'll load up the tin snips, the metal, and the rivet gun and take the pattern to Smokin. A few(12 or so) beers and we'll be Tin Smiths. Hey we were lookin to do something on Thursday any way.

Well BD, we will discuss this in detail. My thought on this from day one has been to skip the seal to the hood and fab up an oversized enclosure that can be ducted to the zoodad or whatever cold air source you have. I see this as ideal as long as the source ducting meets CFM requirements.

BTW, that is good work so far. Ideas are always good. Thanks for sharing.

Off to a great start I think! Reps given! An idea I have for making the filter easier to remove is.......the side piece, on the part where the 4" pipe/intake meets the filter tubing, cut it like a horseshoe shape, open on the top.....then use another small piece that is cut to fill the gap for the top, use heavy duty velcro on the inside to attach it.....the good stuff "should" hold up to the heat. Hope that makes sense? lol

Hey RAMPAGE_F350, if you don't care, could you e-mail me the AFE template? I also am in the process of trying to do this also...Thanks

Here's a little update of what I noticed on this mornings drive with my primitive 1st attempt. The sucking air sound is subdued, but you can still hear it. The take a breath type sound i used to get when shifting into 5th disappeared, and the engine drone is down considerably.

When I got to the shop I left the engine running and got out the infra red thermometer. Standing in front of the bumper if I shot the intake hose on the engine side I got a reading of 82.7. Shooting the 4" exhaust pipe coupler on the "cold" side of the box the reading was 72.5. Outside temp is around 58.

Edit: Did everyone see the round AFE logo on Ron's box? Anyone here creative enough to make up a sticker label that says FTE we can put on our boxes?
