Has anyone bought these headers before? Do they perform well, is the paint quality, or will it peel right away?
One more thing? Should I buy chassis exit or fender-well exit headers? I don't know if I will have room for fender-well exit headers because I am running 34x10.5 superswampers.
The paint will be gone quickly. It's basicaly just for shipping.
Chassis exit can be a pain to get on. Then you have to get your pipes around everything under there. The collectors usually don't end up pointing straight back, so you got to deal with that. You can end up with the starter getting heat soaked.
Outboards, you can adjust the steering stops till the tires don't hit. It should still turn sharp enough. No trouble running pipes, it's a straight shot back. No starter problems & it's a lot easier to work on things under there without the exhaust in the way. The only problem with Headman outboards I've had is the pass side header hitting the front frame cab mount, a little trimming no big deal.
No matter what paint you put on them it won't last long. Getting them coated is the only way.
I'm running hedman fenderwell exit on my 78. Haven't had any clearance issues with cab mounts or the 35's although backspacing of the rim might be helping me there. Paint doesnt last long. Friend of mine heats his headers up with a torch from the inside then paints while its hot. He swears by it but I havent seen his last project fire up yet to see for myself.
Thanks for the help guys, what do the headers look like after the paint is gone? Just raw metal, do they look bad? This truck has been totally rebuilt, I would like them to look half decent ahaha.
If the truck has been totally rebuilt, than I would spend an extra $$$$ and get them ceramic coated or Jet Hot coated. Those coatings cut down on engine compartment heat and look good. No color change with the coatings. Paint (even high temp header paint) will change over time and will not look good. IMO, with headers, if you want them to look good for a long time, having them coated is the only way to go. I'm getting my shorty 460 chassis exit headers Jet Hot coated for $322 with stering silver color. I'm all about cutting down on heat and having them look good. My truck is being totally rebuild from ground up, so I don't want some rusted headers in my engine compartment. I figured if I'm spending the kind of money on the engine and truck, just a good thing to have.......headers that look cool and cut down on heat .
