emblem replacement

i am trying to figure out how to get to the emblems on the side of the cowl on a 79 f150 to replace them. I am planning to restore and need them off, how do i get inside the cowl to take them off?

The emblems have pins protruding from them and they push into plastic inserts in the cowl. If you are really careful, you can use a small screwdriver and a shop rag (to protect the paint) and slowly work back and forth until you can get behind them. There may be better way if you really worried about the paint, but this has always worked for me.

Some 10lb test fishing line threaded between emblem and cab guarantees no scratches.

Use a plastic putty knife, it won't scratch the paint.

The inserts are called barrel clips, and on many models, they are steel, not plastic.

They're not clips, per se, but rather plastic covers that the pegs on the emblem are inserted into. Nine times out of ten, when you pull the emblem, a couple of those inserts are going to come out with the emblem, and a couple won't. I don't know if you can pick up those inserts separately from places like Dennis Carpenter, or if they must come with the emblems. Worth asking, tho.

My guess is that reusing them isn't such a good idea...the emblem will probably sit loose on the cowl if you do, and the vibration of the emblem might scratch the paint surrounding it....just a theory.

They are reuseable, they are also sold individually at DC, LMC or JBG. If they come off with the emblem simply slide them back off and push them into the hole then reinstall the emblem.

yea i they came off good, but on the driver side where it had been hit with something the studs on the back were broke off in the clips. Hey i was gonna ask, do the emblems on the bed and glove box door come off the same way?

yes but never paid attention. It doesnt have an emblem on it and the holes are covered up, i was just wondering if it uses the clips or if the studes for it comes with nuts, or if it is some type of glue on thing. I am not around the truck thru the week so i cant just go out there and open it up and look.
