I am picking up my new 08 6.4 Lariat on Monday. My dealer was willing to swap out my factory 20" goodyear tires for BFG K/O All terrains. He asked me if I wanted him to use "air" or nitrogen in the tires. I have never heard of this. He said that it makes the tires rum cooler and ride much better. Has anyone ever done this ?? Thanks in advance !!
If the dealership will do the Nitrogen for you, let them. Nitrogen doesn't disappear like air with the temperature changes. As for the ride, I wouldn't bet on any noticeable difference. On airplanes, nitrogen is all we can use otherwise the tires would be flat when we descended back down from the extreme cold at altitude. When they do that for you you'll notice you don't have to add air nearly as often as with air. Also, it's not flammable either and you can add normal air with it if you can't get to a shop that has nitro.
He's either lying or stupid, I can't tell which. Nitrogen in the tires makes ZERO difference to ride or tire temperature.
I fill my tires with a mixture that includes 78% nitrogen.
I am not sayin who is right or wrong, but all the reading I have done about nitrogen suggests that the tires will run cooler. I have no idea why, but I have come across this often. The main reason to run nitrogen is that is leaks out of the tires at 1/3 the rate of air. And since most people rarely check air pressure of their tires regularly this means an increase in MPG. Seems like a waste to me.
The reason why aircraft use it in tires is to reduce the fire danger. A tire filled with nitrogen won't burn as easily as a tire filled with "air" (which contains oxygen).
Yet another attempt to bilk unsuspecting (i.e. stupid) consumers out of their cash.
I've never had a auto/tire shop charge me for it although, I usually do it myself at the airport.
As I stated before, Nitrogen isn't flammable and isn't susceptible to temperature changes. With nitro you can check the pressure at 0 or 100 degress and it reads the same. Every aircraft I own and/or operate has it in it and it works.
With nitro you can check the pressure at 0 or 100 degress and it reads the same.
That's not true. All gasses expand when hot and contract when cold, even nitrogen.
I work on a race team. We fill the race tires with pure nitrogen. There is less variation in pressure with temperature, but not zero variation. That's simply not possible.
The reason there is less variation is that bottled nitrogen is dry. There is almost no water vapor. If you use compressed air there is water vapor, and water vapor expands with temperature more than dry nitrogen. If your tires normally run over about 180F you will have less variation in pressure with nitrogen. You'll have many other problems because street tires are not designed to run that hot. Race tires are.
