EGR block off plate

i was wondering if any one has seen an EGR block off plate for a all stock 400. i have fab. my own plate, but i would realy like a better one. i guess a spacer to replace the EGR one on there on would work also.
i would like to read about what ya'll think about running the 400 without the EGR in general. i plan the install larger jets in the carb to richen the mix some.
I have heard the only efffect of not using the EGR is that the exhaust gases are not being recirculated back into the combustion chamber , which cause the air/fuel mix to be lean. true...not true what do you think
thanx a lot

EGR block off plate

One thing you will notice if you block off the egr is that your carb will take longer to heat up to running temperature. Not a problem if you don't live in a cold area or don't drive it much.

Your engine will ping at part throttle.

The EGR is closed at idle. It's function is to lower combustion temperature by contaminating the ports with an inert gas. Emission
type carbs run very lean and would produce harmful Nox emissions when chamber temp exceeded 2500 deg.

If the EGR port is blocked off at the head, it would take longer for the manifold to warm up.

To avoid detonation, you may haxe to use a higher octane fuel, less ignition timing, a richer A/F ratio, or a cooler thermostat.

I wonder if a ping sensor could be used to open EGR when needed.

Now that is a Great idea! Have you ever found a ping sensor that works tho for reasonable $$? Vacuum solenoid switches are cheap in junkyards. Of course just backing off on the vac advance would work too.

I would replace the EGR plate with a spacer. They sometimes get eaten up internally and leak causing odd problems.

I not sure how the knock sensor works or what it controls. I wonder if a stand alone system can be built.

Who says it has to loose power with an inert gas. Couldn't the EGR valve be used to supply a high octane fuel like propane, natural gas, alcohol, etc?

Brian,

Basically a knock sensor is a piezoelectric device screwed into the engine. That means that when a detonation occurs a very small amount of current is produced by the sensor. That pulse is sensed by a module which in turn retards the ignition timing. What you could do is build a module that senses this current and then opens an electronic EGR soleniod which is readily available in a junk yard off of many vehicles. It would help to snag one off of a vehicle for which you had a schematic so you could see how it works. You would then need to decide what input you wanted to use to tell the module to close the soleniod and thus the EGR valve. You could time it or make it so that when you back out of the throttle it closes. Whatever you wanted since you would be building the module. I don't know how much electronics theory you have but with a little inginuity it would work. Would be handy as a safty catch on the track or using nitrous (I think that would work, be careful there and consult someone with nitrous experience). But then again turning down the timing works too. That is the basics, to give you an idea of what would be involved.

My 460 engine is pinging and its because the head needs to have a exhaust plug how do I replace or is there a part for this to close it off and stop the pinging.

I just put a soft plug in the intake hole under the spacer. I don't remember the size off hand. That way you can run the stock spacer plate.
