My engine is a 400 out of a 73 Galaxie I need help on removing the EGR system. I was think about getting a set of fel-pro intake gaskets with the egr block off tabs and just removing the egr adapter plate. What else do i need to do after the removal?
The PO of my truck removed the EGR valve from the plate and blocked off the port - the plate is still there - doesn't seem to hurt anything...
I did have to change out the distributor as the dizzy's for EGR engines are curved differently - I'm using one for a 460 and it seems to work fairly well...
Thanks for the info. Does someone know if my timing is off? My dizzy right now is connected to full vacuum and the idle is smooth. As soon as I remove the vacuum the idle goes down and it runs and sounds like poo and it gives a little pop when i rev it.
i havent messed with the timing at all since i got engine. i noticed it was connected at full vacuum on the front port of the intake when i got it. i knew that wasnt right. so i should cap off the dizzy and manifold port and check the initial timing? when i rev it without mani vacuum it pops and when i rev with full vacuum flames shoot out the headers. its open exhaust right now btw.
Ok well after tapping on the dizzy i got it to move. I moved it toward the direction of the water neck just a lil and the idle has smoothed out. I hooked up full manifold vacuum to the dizzy , it sounds like its pinging so right now its on ported vacuum. Is it normal to have ping with full vacuum at idle?
The pinging may be from the EGR not functioning - Which is why I swapped dizzy's on mine... EGR and non-EGR vehicles have different timing curves, but even a dizzy from an EGR 460 seems to work - I believe that's what I have on mine...
it's normal to have ping when the timing is advanced too much set by 'ear'
it's been suggested that removing EGR will require recurving the distributor and rejetting the carb. flames from open exhaust would also be normal and not much help as a tuning tool
