Hello well the newest problem on 97 f150 4.6 5 speed . The truck will run down the hwy fine then start cutting out and then die. after it sets a few
minutes it re starts fine. Tryed to pull codes today and the scan tool says it can not communicate. The cel would flash fast and the ecm relay would click rapidly. Any help on this would be great. Thanks jeff
A couple of guesses
1) Do you know that the scan tool works with 97 Fords -- all 97 domestics are OBDii, but there are several protocols. Modern code readers generally cover them all, but there are some that do not
2) You may have a bad PCM -- or bad wiring to the PCM. Something may be heating up and quitting. It may even be something outside of the PCM that loads it dowm. I focused on the PCM itself because a) it can happen, and b) your scan tool issue.
Generally the only way to check a PCM is to replace it. GOod news is that they're cheaper then they once were.
1) Replace the flippin' fuse for your cigar lighter. The scanner plug is on the same fuse. All OBD-II scanners will connect to a 97's system. There are no variations of significance for that period.
2) If the PCM Power Relay is chattering, you don't have a PCM problem, you have a problem related to the relay that powers it and a large number of under-hood actuators and sensors.
Possible causes include an intermittent ignition switch, relay, fuse/diode/relay socket, or a wiring fault.
Thanks for the info so far . I have a good scan tool it is a snap on modis and has been a great tool to use. The fuse for the lighter is ok. So I guess I will keep looking. Thanks Jeff
Ok at this point in time the scan tool will communicate with the truck until the cel comes on then it looses all communication. I have tryed to find a bad ground or something. Any ideas????????????? Unhook the batt for a while and it will run ok then act up.
