Or you could remove the second cat (farthest from the engine) and replace the front one that acts as a Y pipe with a high flow cat that has dual in single out.
This is what I run, But we do not have emissions test
A set of headers and a short turn down pipe to direct the heat

And o-yeah it's loud, you definutly do not stick the gas from a compleat stop.
And never let your open pipes be seen from under the truck. I set mine level with the bottom of the frame. A State Officer has the right to issue emmissions tickets.
Here is some other cheap simple mods you can do
Just look through them all , theres like 3 pages. not all are for my F-150.
My truck is not that loud, but has a nice deep tone to it. I have a 351W, I installed as et of Hooker equal length long tube headers, 2.5"" Y-pipe into a high-flow 3"" in/out cat. a 50 series delta Flowmaster (3" in/out) and a single 3" pipe coming out the stock location. It boosted my HP a bit and substantially improved the mpg. the reason I went with the large single instead of the duals was to keep my torque numbers up off idle.
A truck that early should only have one cat on it in the exhaust system(of course what other system will have a cat anyways?)

Nope, 92's have two cats. Come look under my '92 f150 xcab 351w and you'll see ..... oh .... only one cat. I took the other one off! Anyway ... the one at the Y is the one I'd like to get rid of. Spending too much time (and money) under the hood of my '99 F250 7.3L SD lately to mess with the '92 gasser.
on my '95 f150 5.0 I had straight pipes starting from behind cats. I didn't like the way it sounded so I replaced the first cat with a y-pipe and then put on a hi-flow cat--then to the pipes out the rear. That made a huge difference in the sound. Also, the older gentleman that custom bent the duals said that tips on the end of the pipes are mainly responsible for the sound. I have 3.5" diameter 18" long tips and they have a very nice, deep, loud sound!
I have a 94 F150 extended cab 4x4 5.0 5spd. 4x4 and a couple weeks ago got true 2.5" straight duals that go all the way back and out the bed corners. I like the sound and all but I am beginning to look at tips now. Many people told me that when I get tips, get stainless because they won't chip and pit out like the plain chrome ones do, especially when I have gravel/dirt roads where ever I go.
I have stainless ones. Actually all of our vehicles have stainless exhaust or at least stainless tips. I have had chrome ones in the past, and would never fool with that again. They rust and then you have to use steel wool to make them look good again. Its just a pain in the butt. I have gotten stainless tips on ebay for around $40 before.
Theres a chance though that your valves wont open-up completely without the back pressure associated with having a muffler attached to your exhaust.
Thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. You could have 200 mufflers on one mile long exhaust pipe, and the cam would still be the ONLY thing that affects how far the valve opens.
The issue of backpressure is true though, you want a little, especially in a truck, to help retain the low RPM power. Contrary to what everyone's dad has told them, backpressure does not increase power, it only makes it peak at a lower RPM, meaning less back pressure will just give you a peak power later in the RPM range. But it will only give you niticable more power if there are accompanying parts to support power in that RPM range, such as headers, and a cam.
thats exactly what I was getting at.... IFopen exhaust kept valves from opening, there would be a lot of people with broken valves, cams or whateverelse, but the original poster will just go on spouting bs rather than figure it out
