i have a 92 f150 4x4 with straight pipes, but not true duals. i want my truck to be louder and was looking to get a flowmasters muffler. how much will that change my power and gas mileage?
If you add a flowmaster to your truck it wont be louder. Stright pipes are the loudest you can get. How do you have it now? Stock manifolds, stock y pipe, no cat?
If you take the cat off or put a high flow cat on then it'll get louder.....but liek Chris said...straight pipes is as loud as you can get...the flowmaster should give it a good rumble though.
If anything a flowmaster will muffler it down a bit git rid of the cat and put on a high flow or no cat at all and get some headers true dual x pipe h pipe or a custom bent y-pip thats not so restrictive
yeah but my truck isnt that loud to begin with. i have some friends with the same setup as i do , but with a flowmasters and theirs is way louder than mine
You want Loud? shorten the pipes, have them come out under the doors, a longer pipe will beat down the sound the further it has to travel. Theres a chance though that your valves wont open-up completely without the back pressure associated with having a muffler attached to your exhaust. meaning your valve train is gonna get a little bit hotter than normal, and the valve guides slowly eat up the valve stems.
Ebay is loaded up with hi-flow cats for cheap, and if you do want to make it loud. Do headers, get a nice y pipe, and then the highflow and either straight pipe, or a flowmaster orig 40. Orig 40 is there loudest other then the race 1 chamber ones. Here is some high flow cats to look at. I put these on a few cars.
If you want louder, this is how I have my F350 5.8 done.
Longtubes, to my own made 2.5" Y pipe true dual.
True dual 2 the flage, where it then goes into a dual in dual out flowmaster 40 muffler. Where that flage is, is where the stock cat bolted onto my truck. I still need for inspection.
Then it leaves the muffler and 2 90* bends, and then 2 3" or 3.5" SS Slash cut tips at a 45* angle infront of the rear tire. You want loud go that way. Ill make a sound clip tomorrow.
The loudest 2 chamber Flowmaster is the original non delta 40 series. The super 40 is deeper, but still not as loud. The 50 series is 3 chamber and quiter yet. If you want loud try to find a 1 chamber race muffler. I don't think they are street legal though. I would run an original 40 series non delta Flowmaster with a high flow cat if you want it loud. I have a super 40 on mine and it sounds great. I had a regular original 40 before that finally gave out after 10 years and 150K miles. It was definitely louder before, but its alot deeper now. But true dual straight pipes will be the loudest. Basically anything cat or muffler that you add to an exhaust system will make it quieter on some level.
EDIT That was weird. Just when I finished posting a response you said basically the same thing.
