Straight piped vs. muffler sound

I have the bully dog 4" turbo back system on my e99 and I am impressed with the sound but would like it louder. It has one of those mufflers but you can see straight through. Do those straight through mufflers really muffle the sound of the exhaust any. I mean, since you can see straight through (there are little baffles or holes on sides on the inside of the muffler) but would a straight piece of pipe make any difference of sound or is that muffler just as loud?

Have you had someone stomp on your truck going past as you listen? I have an MBRP straight-through muffler, and it's plenty loud! I think straight piping just changes the tone some, not sure about making it louder. But it might drone on you without the muffler. Something to keep in mind.

That muffler does quieten it down a little, but not much. As Joe said, you need to be outside with someone driving by you with their foot on it hard. Eliminate the muffler and it will get louder. Eliminate the turbo and it will be deafening! But with a huge power loss!

Stacks, yea, thats always an idea. But I wanna be able to hear when I get out. Plus I have a box in the bed, and the 4-wheeler fits good behind it. If i were to put stacks in, then I'd have to leave the tailgate down and that just doesn't enthuse me. But a good idea tho. And Izzy, ive actually never had someone drive my truck past me. Maybe i'll try that. Maybe because of the crew cab long bed is why i can't hear it as much.

I have done the muffler, and have done the straight pipe, I have kept the straight pipe, I Love the sound as comared to the muffler. I will say though, I had the 3.5 aero turbine muffler, and would do the 4" aeroturbine muffler.

Here's what the MBRP muffler looks like:

Basically, it's glass-pack and I really like the sound.

I've got the MBRP 4" with mufffler set up. I think even with the muffler, it still roars with the sound of power, and you can really hear the turbo spooling up.

I got the same thing as Joe and Alvin, but duals, no performance gains but sounds good on both sides of the truck. Not to be a B breaker but make sure your inspection station and state laws don't forbid open exhaust, straight pipe. In my state you can get away with it but alot of inspection stations won't pass it in fear of them losing their license. Just a thought. In all honesty, there's not really too much in sound between the two, just a little.

The Muffler makes quite a bit of differance. I did the Straight pipe, and then the MBRP 4" muffler. I personally loved the straight pipe sound better, but my neighbors I think like the muffler. If you only care about cool sound quality- Straight pipe.

I have a 5" straight pipe that dumps out just in front of the passenger rear wheel ( got tired of cleaning black smoke residue off of my racecar and white travel trailer) and it is plenty loud. I have had no issues in Texas or Virginia with inspections

I have a buddy with a 6.0L. He's got a 5" straight piped system on it and the only thing that sounds all that different to me is when he starts up cold. The VVT has a bad-*** jet sound (better than our EBPV by a country mile IMHO)...
