a buddy of mine tells me to add a quart of automatic tranny fuild on every tank full of diesel that it will keep my injectors clean on my 1999 ford powerstroke diesel with a 7.3 how true is this
I will mix a gallon of ATF in with a full tank of fuel about every 30,000 miles. I don't really know if it's doing anything, but so far at 130,000 miles no problems.
DK does more than just clean the fuel system. It helps add lubricity back into the new ULSD (I guess ATF will do that, too), but it also acts as an anti-gel (white jug for the winter, depending where you are), and increases Cetane. I use the white jug in the winter and grey one in the summer. I use it every tank full, except when I run bio-diesel.
Adding a quart of ATF will discolor the diesel enough that if you happen to get stopped and a fuel sample is pulled, you'll be fined for running untaxed/off road diesel. They dye it red so they know the difference. Run DK and avoid the risk.
I've heard that ATF is old school and that although it is oil and does add lube to your diesel it does have additives in it that weren't designed to burn. I've been using 2 stroke oil which is designed to burn but also add the anti-gel when temps dictate it. That's my 2 cents.

Wouldn't they have to PROVE that it was dyed diesel rather than ATF?
Or maybe it's the government so they don't have to prove anything?
Any legal experts here on FTE?
Diesel Kleen hardly does anything for lubricity. If you really want to improve lubricity, run some bio-diesel. Any blend from 2% and up is fine. No additive can improve lubricity as much as bio can. Opti lube comes close.
Guys,
what about ashless 2 stroke marine outboard oil. I have heard 1 ounce per gallon of diesel fuel can makes quieter injectors and gives back up to 2 MPG that this ULSD has taken from us 7.3's
I havent tried iet yet, but plan to next month when i fill up.
there was a thread a while back about the "diesel site" or "diesel place" that conducted a survey over which fuel addative actually worked and i think that two stroke oil was the winner (edit: woops i was way off). i'll try to find the posts.
I agree with Pocket on the lube properties of DK, I've used DK grey for the last 60k but awhile back Orezona made a post about an independent study of additives to determine how well they performed. Bio was at the top of the list, Opti-Lube XPD was 2nd, DK was way down the list. I decided to give the Opti-Lube a try, I'm on my 2nd tank of fuel using it, I think it has quieted the engine somewhat.
Glenn it's on the Diesel Place web site, have to register to view, the link to the study at Diesel Place can be found at Opti-Lube.com.
Beat me to it Glenn, Thanks

Pocket has a good point, this is what i run B5 B10 with Dipetane. Look this stuff up on internet. Work's with Bio reg diesel, gasoline. It's great stuff!
