I have several problems with my engine that I dont understand.
first one, I read in a message here that cyl 1,2,3,4 is on the driver side of the car and the 5,6,7,8 is on the passenger side
?? it this true??
that would explane some things because the car runs like #####
and I cant find the problem.
The second one is that when I try to find TDC on no 1 cyl
it´s not on the timingscale?? But if i go for (in my case)
the no 5 cyl
(the one on the driverside) that one is on the timingscale right on TDC ???
If the no 1 cyl is on the driverside then both questions are answerd,
but if its not what the f... is the problem whit my timing?
1. The plugs are 1,2,3,4 Passenger side.
5,6,7,8 are Drivers side.
2. Sounds like you installed your distributer 180 degrees off.
3. Your firing order should be 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8. The rotation of
your rotor is counter-clockwise. Standing in front of your engine, number one on the dist. cap should be at the one
o-clock position...the next cylinder firing (#5) should be at the eleven o-clock position.

thanks Deen, thats what I belived, But when I check for TDC on no1 cyl it´s just not working for me. I unscrew the sparkplugg and inserted a screwdriver ,ok, when the piston is on TDC I would be abel to see TDC on the timing scale as well, regardless if it is on a compression stroke or not. thats the problem!! the scale follows the no 5 cyl?? It must be wrong "Timing scale wheel" (don´t know what it call in english) on the engine. or what??!??

If the timing marks line up with what you say is the number 5 cylinder then you have it wrong, your actually on the number 1 cylinder. Here's what you do, stand in front of the truck. Now, the first cylinder on your left should be #1.
There is no way for the "Timing Scale Wheel" (it's called a Damper) to be put on incorrectly. Either it will not fit on, or it will fit on properly... Unless you dont have the crank KEY in the crankshaft.. That is what lines everything up where it should be.
Number 1 cyl is at the front, on the passenger side of the engine.
Number 5 cyl is at the front, on the Drivers side of the
engine.
The firing order is : 1, 5, 4, 2, 6, 3, 7, 8
Make sure the piston number one is at TDC on the Compression stroke (put your finger over the spark plug hole or hold a spark plug over the hole..when it blows out, you are on compression stroke.)
If your damper is on incorrectly (no Key), and the timing marks continue to line up incorrectly, you will either have to pull the damper back off or simply time it "by ear", which is not real good but it'll work.
Good luck!

Or you could do what I did with my old Chevy. Ran like crap, seemed like a timing thing. Checked TDC (using the "finger-over-the-sparkplug-hole" trick), and WHAT??? the pointer was 30 degrees off. What had happened was that the rubber holding the two pieces of the harmonic balancer had rotted (was 25 years old after all), and the outer portion had shifted, so I was timing my engine 30 degrees advanced of where it was supposed to be. For a short term fix, I found TDC, marked the harmonic balancer with a sharpie, and re-timed it, eye-balling about 10 degrees advance. Worked good enough to get me to the parts store.
Yes, thats must be it ,I think I have the same problem as mclerico.
Because I´ve try "finger over the hole trick" and probably a thousand more tricks, and the crank key is there.
The rubber between the inner and outer of the damper is little worn so the best I can do is to either get a new damper or make my own scale. Anyway you boys are great!
and thanks for all the tip.
It´s pity that the spellcheck has disappeard
