checking the stroke

Sorry for posting this again but I need something cleared up. I did a search but couldn't ever find what I needed. I checked the stroke in my engine but I think I did it wrong. With the engine in the truck how do you get it to TDC? Do you need to take the tranny off to turn the crank by hand? It should measure out to 3.5 for 360 and 3.75 for 390, that is in inches correct? If the #1 cyl is at TDC then the #4 cyl is at the bottom of the stroke right? My truck is lifted and it is a pain to get up in the engine comparment. I was looking at the carb and it is a four barrel Holley carb I think. Had 4 holes and holley on the side of the carb. Did the 360 come with a 4 barrel carb? Still has the old iron intake on it. Sorry for the dumb questions but I have no experience with this stuff. Thanks jake
