My first question is, on a 71 block there is a Z or an N shape mark to set the timing. Where is zero in relation to this mark. And how the hell do i get the hold down bolt on the distributor off. Are there certain tools or tricks.

They make distributor wrenches that are offset to clear the distributor head and get underneath to the bolt. Go to your local parts store and ask for one for that engine.. Not expensive, and something you are bound to use again in the lifetime of the engine.
