the click could be the starter relay working and not the starter solenoid or it's the starter solenoid kicking but the starter motor is stuck. that would be where the hammer comes into play. testing it is the best idea anyway. i replaced mine two years ago with the basic one from advance auto parts. no problems yet. it was amazing how over time the old starter had been slowly getting sluggish and i didn't notice it, then when the new one was on, it sounded like it was spinning twice as fast.
one note: my starter bolts came loose after a week, i know i tightened them, so i put some loctite on the bolts, which was probably not a good idea seeing as they go into aluminum
did you hit the solenoid or the body of the motor? sometimes electric motors get "dead" spots in them (meaning it needs rebuilt or replaced) that you can get them past by hitting the motor with a hammer while applying the voltage either by the key, cables or jumping it with a screwdriver. best thing is to take it off and bench test it or have the parts store do it. sounds like it's bad (either solenoid or motor), assuming that all the connections to the starter from the batts are good and clean?
I believe so. but it has only 2 bolts compared to our three. I also think the wiring ends up in a different place but I don't think that is as much an issue.
Wonder why they only went with two bolts instead of three. Oh well.
Just being cheap! They saved in machining and a bolt, and a new vender to supply the starter. You have to drill the lug out on the wiring a little bit. It will not fit on the starter. I would rather have the 3 bolt starter. Allthough it may not need it.
Reminds of one of the mini vans. Dont remember which one. On a rearend inpact the door will open and passengers can fly out. All because some smart ars engineer said save the money on the washer. They were recalled to install the washer.
No I figured with a helmet it would be fun ride for me! not others. I don't have much excitement in my life right now! I need a good thrill ride. Almost had one this morning. nearly rear ended a cop in a blizzard!!
I have a 2000 E-450SD and the starter is slow to start turning the engine over, but soon picks up speed and startes the engine fine, and this just started, (good battery and charge, all good connections and cables) the only solenoid is mounted on the starter. There are new starters for about $100. no core, and rebuilt units for $85 to 90 with a core charge. But I found no such thing as a HD starter, except one for a diesel, witch is geared and costs about $500.
Replacing looks easy, its all out in the open.
